695. IMPORTANT AND HISTORICAL 18TH CENTURY POWDER HORN- DATED 1775, MINUTEMAN. This large 18th century horn with a simple carved nozzle has the most interesting inlaid horn panel on the wood butt which reads "1775 Frederick Van Dyke Somrset N. J. MinuitMAN". According to the New Jersey archives of Revolutionary War personnel, Van Dyke did serve in the Revolutionary War. We are told that very few Minuitmen came from New Jersey, and most of these entered the war in the latter part of 1775. The horn with a simple-carved nozzle retains fragmented portions of the original leather strap. The wood plug in the butt end is affixed by large head brass tacks that are obvious 19th century replacements. The plug was originally secured with small pegs as is the normal case with an 18th century horn, and one such peg is still apparent under the leather strap. It is apparent that the brass tacks were added later at the very spots that the wooden plugs were. The small horn panel is affixed in the wood butt by what appear to be small brass brads. The horn was collected some 40-50 years ago by a New York collector who has long since deceased. The horn, together with a collection of Brown Bess Muskets, was consigned to this auction by the heir. SIZE: 18" on the curve. The butt is approximately 3-1/2" in diameter. CONDITION: Structurally sound with great old patina. What appears to be the original leather carrying strap is in pieces and very fragile. 4-43785 (1,000-4,000)

A large percentage of this printed material deals with the life and times of General Sickles. Also accompanying is a large frame of burl walnut containing two photographs of Crawford, his autograph, a sharpshooter metal and a photograph of his store in New Mexico. There is an additional frame of photographs of General Sickles and the three corps badges he served under. Additionally accompanying is a copy of a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle as having an octagon barrel, set trigger, and being shipped on May 25, 1875 with 309 other arms. The book appears to be intact with a loose spine and several loose pages, missing 1-1/4" of the spine covering. The frames and photographs and copies of photographs, are very good. 4-43210 JL434 (20,000-50,000)

711. DELUXE ENGRAVED BULLARD SPORTING RIFLE PRESENTED TO BUFFALO BILL. CAL.: .40-90. Wonderful and rare deluxe Bullard rifle with 28" octagon barrel, Rocky Mountain front sight and Winchester 73-style semi-buckhorn rear sight, full magazine, with highly figured deluxe checkered forearm and buttstock with "S" shaped grip and Bullard Repeating Arms Co. hard rubber buttplate having an elk head in the center. The left side of the receiver is engraved with foliate arabesque patterns having punch dot background and a light engraved border line with the sideplate having an engraved riband which is inscribed: "PRESENTED TO / Col. Wm F. Cody / BY THE / BULLARD REPEATING ARMS CO." The right side of the receiver is covered with about 50% foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background. The balance of the receiver and dust cover have light border decorations. There are more border decorations at the chamber and muzzle ends of the barrel. There is also a small, highly-detailed raised silver inlaid buffalo head on the tang behind the hammer. NOTE: This rifle, until August 2001, was on display in the Buffalo Bill Museum, Buffalo Bill Historic Center, Cody, WY. No visible SN. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. The barrel retains about 95% thinning blue with scattered pin points of surface rust and one or two larger spots and a small cleaned area on the left flat. The magazine tube retains blue in the sheltered areas, with the balance being a thin blue/gray patina. The forearm cap retains about 60% thin blue. The receiver retains 92-94% thinning bright blue, with a dull upper tang. The falling block retains about 80-85% bright, high polished blue. The hammer retains 50-60% strong casecolors turning brown to silver. The lever, with casecolors in sheltered areas, is mostly a light silver/brown patina. The wood is sound and retains 96-97% strong, bright original varnish, with a series of small bruises on the bottom of the forearm. The buttplate is fine, turning slightly chocolate and shows light wear at the heel. Brilliant, shiny bore. NOTE: It is well known and recorded that Buffalo Bill, during his lifetime, owned and was presented hundreds and probably thousands of firearms. This cataloger is familiar with a number of them and has heard of many more. However, this may be the only Bullard with Buffalo Bill connection known. It makes sense that the Bullard Repeating Arms Co., only in business from 1886 to 1890, at the height of Buffalo Bill's fame, would have sought his endorsement to their product. Buffalo Bill, at that time, had just completed his first European tour with his Wild West Show and was without question, the most recognized and well-known man in the world. It is also interesting to note that this rifle, in caliber .40-90, is not a listed caliber for Bullards. 4-44246 JL235 (75,000-200,000)

712. HISTORICAL BALLARD RIFLE PRESENTED TO PAWNEE BILL. CAL.: 22. This rifle bears an inscription engraved on the top three flats of the chamber area of the barrel "Presented to / MAJOR GORDEN LILLIE / from his friend J.J. Jones". Major Gordon Lillie was known by his stage name as Pawnee Bill and was a personal friend and one-time partner of Buffalo Bill in the touring Wild West Show. He was also the honorary Chief of the Pawnee Indian Nation. J.J. Jones was in fact Josephine Jones, a trick shot and sharpshooter, who historically gained fame as such, even before Annie Oakley. How the presentation came to pass is, at this time, unknown, but the engraving is unmistakably period to the rifle. The consignor states that this rifle has been in his family's possession, to his direct knowledge, since the early 1940s, when as a child he was told by his great-uncle that Major Gordon Lillie had given him the rifle, and that Lillie's wife May, had used it. He further states that the rifle has been passed down through his family to him and has never left their possession. SN 18329. CONDITION: About good. No original finish remains. The metal is a medium gray color with mottled silvered case colors on the receiver. The wood is sound and retains some original finish on the buttstock with the forearm showing more wear with nicks, dings and scratches. The bore is dark and severely eroded with traces of rifling. A wonderful opportunity to own a one of a kind, historic rifle. 4-42601 (10,000-20,000)

Both ranches are still operating today and the Coe family is very prominent and active in Cody society. The carving set is contained in a leather-bound wood case with gold washed hinges and latch. The lid is embossed in Old English script "T.D.S./1878". These are apparently the initials of the agent T. Steel. The clincher is a small old paper tag on the bottom with pen and ink writing that says "Car/TE". The TE Ranch is Buffalo Bill's Ranch that is still in operation. CONDITION: Overall, very good. The steel parts of the knife and fork retain a grayish metal color with scattered discoloration. The handles each have a longitudinal crack and age lines. 720 COLT 1878 DA REVOLVER WITH BUFFALO BILL INSCRIPTION. CAL.: .45 Boxer. Nickel finish, 7-1/2" barrel with blued trigger and hammer, ivory grips and a lanyard loop in the butt. The revolver has about 75% coverage foliate arabesque scroll engraving with usual marking on top of the barrel and where the caliber marking is normally found on the side of the barrel there is a long oval panel inscribed "Buffalo Bill's Wild West." The backstrap is engraved "* Hon. Wm F. Cody * / London." The top of the backstrap, behind the hammer, has a crown with the initials "VR." After careful examination, it has been determined that the arabesque pattern engraving is old American engraving, possibly of the period of the revolver, as is the barrel panel and backstrap inscription. The crown and "VR," however, are by another hand and possibly a later date. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter dated June 13, 2001, indicating that this revolver was shipped August 30, 1880, as a .45 Colt with nickel finish and rubber grips to Hartley & Graham, New York, NY in a shipment of 20 guns. The date of shipment certain lends plausibility to this revolver having been presented to Buffalo Bill by a friend or admirer during a visit to New York, and then the crown and "VR" addition made after his 1883 visit to England. Also accompanied by a modern felt-lined wooden box. SN 2840. CONDITION: Very good. Retains 65-75% original nickel with areas of light brown patina where the nickel has flaked away. The hammer and trigger retain 40-50% niter blue, turning brown. The grips have a wonderful yellow patina with numerous age lines and fit the frame very well. Strong, bright bore, slightly dark in the grooves. 4-43223 JL237 (20,000-40,000)

It has uncheckered wood with a straight stock and crescent steel buttplate with trap. It is accompanied by a Winchester Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle as having been shipped with 17 other rifles on March 30, 1887 to order #16933. It also has a beautifully worked bearskin dogsled scabbard with sealskin lining, hand-stitched with trade tassel decoration, trade bead rosettes with what appear to be RCMP tunic buttons of silver with caribou heads and an arrow. It has cartridge loops that contain five .38WCF rounds and three large copper conchos, two of which have different engraving, but the same center mark of "NWC." and the third one with a third style of engraving with the center marked "HB" (Hudson Bay Company?) The top end of the outside of the scabbard has a 4 3/4" diameter round leather medallion carved with maple leaves and the emblem of the Northwest Mounted Police and with what appears to be a brass NWMP crown. Also included is an early box for Winchester cartridges containing nine original .38WCF rounds. The box has a red label with green side tape marked for the Winchester Model 1873. Also included is a four-page typewritten resume of Potts' life and a small paperback booklet from the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta, Canada 1966 by Hugh A. Dempsey entitled "Jerry Potts/Plainsman", that details the life of Jeremy Potts. In addition, there is a mounted piece of paper which appears to be a sale bulletin of the original Antler's Bar of Anchorage, Alaska stating that a Winchester and dogsled case owned by famed Canadian scout Jerry Potts was legal to sell. Additional research has disclosed more mentions of Potts service to the NWMP on pages 27, 28 & 29 of the book "The Mounties, The History of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police" by Jim Lotz. All three detail approximately the same information. Also in the book "The Mounties..." is a picture of Potts holding what possibly is this 73 rifle. The left sideplate of the rifle is very lightly engraved "Official N.W.M.P./hired scout/Fort Benton" with an NWMP emblem and the date "1889" and the name "Jerry Potts" in a riband off to the side. On the left side of the buttstock are the connected initials "J.P." in small iron tacks. It is unlikely that Potts did any of this work himself, as he is reported to have been illiterate. He named his son "Blue Gun", probably after this gun. SN 231516 CONDITION: About good. No original finish remains. The metal has a light brown, cleaned patina with moderate rust pitting at various places. The left sideplate has been cleaned. 749. PAIR OF BELGIAN MADE TARGET PISTOLS PRESENTED PORFERIO DIAZ. CAL.: .44 Russian. The following lot is represented to have belonged to Porferio Diaz, who was a general in the Mexican army and later became president of Mexico from 1876 to 1880 and again from 1884 to 1910. Beautiful pair of pistols with 10-5/8" octagon barrels having matted rising ribs with tiny bead front sight and adjustable rear sight. Additionally accompanying is a letter dated November 12, 1992, by Herb Houze, authenticating this brace of pistols. He states the monogram is identical to Diaz' arms preserved in the Douglas arms collection of the Royal Military College of Canada. He further identifies them as appearing to be the same pair sold as Lot 200 in the sale of Lt. Col. James W. Flanagan by Parke-Bernet Galleries on April 21 & 22, 1944. He states that a note in the margin of this catalog indicates that this lot originally belonged to Walter Douglas, who purchased the Diaz collection in 1937. No SNs. The consignor states that he is aware of an identical set of pistols that were made for the President of Chile. CONDITION: The pistols are as new, probably unfired. 873A. RARE ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR BY ADOLF HITLER. This original watercolor, done by Adolf Hitler before he came into power, depicts the north side and the unfinished tower of St. Steven's Church in Vienna and a small part of the Stefansplatz. The watercolor is accompanied by an interesting letter of authentication executed on February 26, 1972. This authentication is done by a Peter Jahn. Mr. Jahn was an expert on Hitler paintings and his specific function during the years of 1937-1944 was to search out and re-purchase any of Hitler's works of art that had been executed before his coming into power. (In part because of this, very few of Hitler's watercolors exist.) Hitler apparently felt that because the watercolors were of little commercial value and because of his new position of prominence, he would prefer not to have these works out amongst the public. It was Jahn's specific purpose to seek out and re-purchase these watercolors. In his letter, he is specifically familiar with this painting. In 1939 he indicates an owner of a bank was in possession of it at that time and he attempted to repurchase it. The signature in the lower right hand corner is muted and an attempt was made to remove Hitler's signature, possibly by the owner after the demise of the war? Jahn also indicates that over the many years that he examined Hitler's paintings and watercolors, this one was the largest personally known to him. SIZE: Approximately 13" w x 18" h. CONDITION: Other than the stain in the signature area, it is generally in good condition. It is matted and framed in a contemporary frame. 4-44248 (10,000-15,000)

The revolver is a Belgian-marked, French-made, LeFaucheux 9mm pinfire with engraved frame, cylinder and octagon part of the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked with the company name and address and the right side of the barrel with the inscription "SR.-INSP. J. FRENCH N.W.M.P. 1874" that appears to have been from a more recent application. The dirk has a dainty 4-1/4" double edge blade, 1/2" at the oval ricasso, with iron hand guard that has ball quillions and a decorated solid ivory handle marked in early script "N.W.M.P. 1874" and on the other side "J-French" in the same style and size font as was used to inscribe the revolver, accompanied by its original leather sheath with silver throat, missing the tip. These two items are housed in an old wooden box that has the lid decorated with an old N.W.M.P. logo decoupaged to the center and inscribed "PIONEERS OF A GLORIOUS FUTURE" over the top, and "SUB-INSPECTOR, JOHN FRENCH - FORT BENTON 1874". The inscription and the logo appear to be authentic. Inside, the case is early, green velvet-lined with brass tacks and has two different kinds of N.W.M.P. metal pins or badges, along with the silver initials "NWMP" and a French one centime copper coin dated 1848. Inside the lid is another early paper NWMP logo. The tray lifts out to expose a small empty compartment. Inspector French is photographed and mentioned a number of times throughout the book. The gauntlets are with light roan-colored hair with tanned leather palms and thumbs, probably of moose or elk hide. They are lined in the hands with soft wool and canvas in the gauntlet area. Inside each cuff is a stamp "J. French/N.W.M.P." CONDITION: Revolver has no original finish, being a silver metal color. The dirk has a very fine blade with a crack on one side of the handle, and the sheath good with loose stitching. 874. *HISTORIC OFFERING OF TWO PISTOLS RELATING TO THE CAPTURE OF REICHSMARSHAL HERMANN GOERING. This lot consists of an engraved, gold-washed Walther PPK surrendered by Goering when Lt. Jerome Shapiro captured him at the close of WWII. The lot also has the Colt 1911 A1used by Shapiro when he affected the capture. Also accompanied by a Feldherrnhall Celtic-style dagger reported as having been Goering's also. The Walther is described as cal. .32 ACP, having full coverage oak leaf and acorn engraving patterns, gold wash, and having standard mottled composition grips that were probably originally brown and have now faded to gray. This pistol is encased in a red leatherette covered white plush-lined standard case with the Walther banner and "PPK" in the lid. It contains the pistol, a spare brown bottom thumb rest magazine and has a slot for a cleaning rod, which is missing. The Colt is a standard 1911A1, cal. .45 ACP, with parkerized finish and full checkered brown plastic grips. On the slide, directly above the serial number, is the number "D44". The dagger is most unusual with a 13-1/2" double edge blade made of bronze with tapered center raised rounded spine. The handle is made of ivory and is overall 5-1/2" long with a 2-1/4"mushroom shaped round pommel cap. The handle wraps over the end of the blade and has two blunt end quillions, which have two small gold and blue enamel inlays on each side, there is another larger gold and blue enamel inlay on each side of the handle, and a small teardrop-shaped gold and blue enamel inlay underneath the mushroom-shaped cap. "This entire lot was consigned by a major who acquired it directly from Shapiro's widow after his death. Prior to Lt. Shapiro's death, the Major was stationed for 10 years in Delaware, near Lt. Shapiro and during that time became close personal friends with Lt. Shapiro. As a result of the consignor's interviews and conversations with Jerome Shapiro, which were later confirmed by fellow officers and other books, articles and at least one television program, essentially the details are as follows: In early May, 1945, information was relayed to Gen. Robert L. Stack, assistant division commander of the 36th infantry division, that Goering wished to surrender to the Americans. In these waning days of the war, Hitler and Goering had a falling out. Hitler was incensed and ordered the S.S. to kill Goering. Goering was essentially fleeing for his life and, subsequently, wished to surrender to the Americans where he was convinced that he would receive refuge. Gen. Stack contacted 1st Lt. Gordon Sill of the 636th tank destroyer battalion. Stack requested that any available unit that could possibly be made available should immediately begin searching for Goering. One of the units dispatched, according to both Sill and Lester Leggett, a Sgt. of a platoon in the 636th, was 2nd Lt. Jerome Shapiro. Shapiro was attached to the 142nd Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon and he, along with five other groups, headed out in different directions in search of Goering. Lt. Jerome's two-man patrol happened to be the one that encountered Goering first. Goering immediately surrendered. He was in his bulletproof Mercedes limousine with his wife and daughter, entourage of several officers and 12 suitcases of clothing and uniforms, etc together with 11 other German vehicles in the convoy. When he officially surrendered to Shapiro, he reportedly requested that he be allowed to keep his unloaded Smith & Wesson revolver, which he had always been known to carry, so that he could present it in formal surrender to Gen. Eisenhower, but agreed to give Shapiro the gold-plated Walther at the time as a symbol of his surrender. (Eisenhower later refused to receive Goering or his Smith & Wesson pistol. The S& W, we are told, now resides in the West Point Museum.). Shapiro and his jeep then escorted Goering to Gen. Stack where he was placed under protective custody. The first night one of his guards was Lt. Jerome Shapiro. Shapiro was a master of four different languages - English, German, French and Yiddish. As such, he was capable of conversing with Goering in Goering's native language rather then in English. During this short acquaintance with Shapiro, Goering developed somewhat of a rapport and during the Nuremberg trials, Goering requested that Shapiro be one of his guards. Thus, Shapiro was one of the guards supposedly assigned to guard Goering. This was not necessarily to Shapiro's liking as it detained him from an early return home. However, it was probably the appropriate political move on Goering's behalf, considering the fact that Shapiro was Jewish. During this time, Lt. Shapiro traded or received as gifts various items directly from Goering. Some of these items are still retained by the consignor and, we are told, will be part of a future display in a museum. The consignor currently owns Jerome Shapiro's Bronze Star, which was supposedly awarded to him for his capture of Goering. According to various conversations, the consignor indicated that Shapiro had been awarded the Bronze Star not only for the capture, but also because of the danger associated with the action that set him deep behind enemy lines. In the closing days of the war, the S.S. troops were still resisting and in addition the S.S. was still very aggressive in attempting to locate Goring to assassinate him. Shapiro not only captured him, but effected his safe transfer back at essentially great risk to his own life and according to Shapiro, this was the reason given on his citation for the bronze star. After the completion of the war, a letter was sent to Gen. Stack from the Boy Scouts of America. The letter requested the signature of Gen. Stack as they understood that it was he who captured Goering. Stack corrected the Boy Scouts and indicated that it was in fact a 2nd Lt. under his command that actually captured Goering. He sent a letter to 2nd Lt. Jerome Shapiro indicating that the Boy Scouts wished the signature of the person who captured Hermann Goering. According to the consignor, sometime during the 1960's one of the television networks featured a program entitled "the 20th Century". In it, Walter Cronkite was the spokes-person and one such session on the "20th Century" was an excerpt of the capture of Reichsmarshal Goering. On the program, Cronkite referred to Jerome Shapiro as being the 2nd Lt. who effected the initial capture of Hermann Goering. After Shapiro returned home, he was frequently asked to lecture on his wartime experiences and, we are told, he responded with great enthusiasm. Eventually, he became very eloquent with his presentation. He would take his war trophies along to these lectures and would allow the audience to handle them. (This, in fact, accounts for the condition of the gold plating on the Walther pistol today.) It is a fitting conclusion to a tragic saga, that a Jewish American soldier captured Goering, the man who organized the "final solution" in regards to the Jews in WWII Germany. Accompanying this lot will be a full copy of the original Bill of Sale between the consignor and Mrs. Jerome Shapiro, documenting the transfer of the two pistols and various other items. Also accompanying this lot, is a Delaware State Bureau of identification firearms Bureau card dated shortly after the war when Shapiro returned, registering this Walther pistol to Arleen Harriet Shapiro, Jerome's wife. Ser. Walther40811K, Colt1164052. Also included is a notarized letter affirming all of the above. Signed by the current owner and personal friend of Lt. Shapiro, together with copies of some of the related articles on the capture. CONDITION: The Walther is probably unfired, but has been handled excessively, wearing away 30-35% of the thin gold wash. The worn areas are a dark brown patina. It has a bright, shiny bore. The case is nicked and missing several small spots and one larger one on the lid and is lightly soiled. The spare magazine retains 75-80% thin gold wash. The Colt retains 85-90% dark parkerizing with strong bore, dark in the grooves. The dagger has a very dark patina on the blade with a ding at the tip. The handle has a hairline crack through one of the small inlays, which is missing, otherwise has a light yellow patina with numerous fine age lines. This is a most unique opportunity to own an important and historic piece of WWII history. 4-43179 JL435 (25,000-100,000)

875. *SAVAGE MODEL 1905 MILITARY TEST TRIAL PISTOL CAL: .45ACP. One of the total 100 pieces made by Savage and one of the pieces actually used in the test trials. The first 50 units shipped from Savage to Springfield for testing were stolen. So, they made the second 50, which successfully arrived and were tested against the Colt and others. Unfortunately, they were not adopted. Our pistol is of standard issue with blued finish, 5 1/4" barrel, ribbed top slide marked on the top with the company name, address and patent date with the caliber. It has a rounded serrated hammer, fixed sights, thumb safety and grip safety. The grips are full, checkered walnut and it is accompanied by the original matching numbered magazine.
