This is indeed an auction of historic proportions. The diversity, quality, rarity and value offered in this presentation represents one of the finest auctions our firm or any firm has presented in many, many years. The President Theodore Roosevelt Fox shotgun is probably the most historic and most valuable American shotgun ever offered at public sale. The sale is, in part, made up of various renowned collections, included is the coll. of the late David Crocker of Easley, SC, the extraordinary collection of small bore Marlins from the estate of the late Richard Rohal, the coll. of the late David Crowley that includes a great diversity of highly collectible arms, with some outstanding examples of flint and percussion, target and sporting arms. We also have another portion of rare Confederate arms from the renowned Fred and Nancy Edmunds collection as well as a coll. of Class III weapons from the estate of noted scholar Bill Vallerand. This will certainly be a spectacular sale with a tremendous diverse offering, much of which is fresh to the market and will certainly include items for just about any level of collector.

Outstanding results were achieved in all areas highlighted by a set of 17 silk trade banners fetching $125,350 and being purchased by a consortium of Maine Institutions and Organizations. This method of purchase, being the first of its kind to our knowledge, shows Maine as an innovator in its quest to retain significant cultural and artistic State treasures. The sale showed strength in fresh to the market goods which consistently achieved much higher than expected results.

June 22 & 23, 2010
With the world’s economies still floundering, it is very hard to predict what auction results will be in today’s world. We came into this auction with thoughts of pride, anticipation and trepidation. Pride; for the extensive and diverse offering of fine art glass and lighting. Anticipation; because of the considerable amount of monetary value being offered. Trepidation; because of uncertainty of how the economic conditions might affect buyers. We are very pleased and proud to announce that the sale was a wonderful success totaling nearly $2 Million! Tiffany remained very strong with the highlight being the Tiffany Geranium table lamp estimated at $30,000-$40,000 and sold to the winning bidder for $63,250. See the Selected Highlights for more of the outstanding prices realized.
Advertising, Toy & Doll Division
June 30, 2010 & July 1, 2010
Our June 30 & July 1 Toy, Doll & Advertising auction was a tremendous success, grossing nearly $2.1 Million!  (nearly a half million dollars over a presale estimate of items sold of approximately $1.6 Million). The Bergmann Santa and sleigh pulled by goats brought a phenomenal $161,000 making it the most expensive American tin toy sold in the last 15+ years! It is also the most expensive toy of any type sold at auction in the last 2-3 years anywhere in the world. We and our consignors are absolutely elated with the results.  The Malcolm Deisenroth collection of early American tin toys was touted as the finest and most significant of its type to ever come to auction (and sales results certainly confirmed that). The collection brought approximately $1.04 Million against expectations of approximately $870,000.

In addition to Deisenroth’s fabulous collection were other quality consignments including mechanical banks, coin-op, fine dolls, salesman samples, antique advertising, and more, many of which performed admirably including an all original Caille upright double slot machine that sold for $80,500 (est. $45-65,000).  In our present economy, it is very difficult to predict what auction results will be, but this sale proved that fresh to the market, quality goods that are reasonably estimated are still bringing strong money.

See the Selected Highlights for more of the outstanding prices realized. Despite the great success, some items did not sell. Why not check the list of no-sales and contact Andrew Truman or Julie Killam if you wish to make a reasonable offer on any of the unsold items?  All offers made are subject to our buyer’s premium.

March 15 & 16, 2010
Bo-Whoop, Hair-Trigger Meldrum, and Nicholas Noel Boutet where some of the great stars in our March 15th & 16th auction. The sale grossing nearly $8.5 million , against a pre-sale estimate of approx. $7 million, was a tremendous success.
Nash Buckingham’s long lost and beloved Bo-Whoop shotgun, recently consigned to Julia’s became the 3rd most expensive American shotgun ever sold at auction when it realized $201,250 (the most expensive American shotgun was an A-1 Parker Special made for the Czar of Russia, sold for $287,500 by J.D. Julia in March 2007. The second highest American Shotgun was an L.C. Smith Deluxe also sold by this firm, in March 2008, which realized $235,750.) An extremely rare gold inlaid and engraved Colt Single Action, at one time presented to Robert Meldrum by the Tomboy Gold Mine Co. in Telluride, CO, sold for $258,750. The biggest star of the auction was a collection of extraordinary high-art gold and silver mounted flintlock pistols by Nicholas Noel Boutet. This cased set saw a great deal of bidding action and finally hammered down at $437,000. There were many other pleasant surprises throughout the auction and in general, as is the case with all auctions in this new economy, there were bargains scattered throughout, but most importantly there was strong bidding activity and in general all categories did quite well overall.

A wonderful Tiffany Studios flower form vase sold for $11,500. Two magnificent E. Michel cameo glass vases; one selling for $25,300 and the other selling for $20,125. A gorgeous Daum Nancy blackbird vase with eighteen blackbirds had a presale estimate of $10,000 to $15,000 selling for $12,650 and a truly beautiful Tiffany red favrile decorated cabinet vase with an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000; selling for $6,612.50. An exceptional Parrot & Aquarium leaded glass window estimated at $3,000 to $5,000 selling for $16,100. The sale definitely showed a strong turn around in the economic conditions in the antiques world.
Advertising, Toy & Doll Division
November 21, 2009
Our November toy, doll & advertising auction was a tremendous success, helping to make 2009 a stellar year for Julia’s. Thanks to our customers and clients and some spectacular collections and consignments, strong (and sometimes record) prices were realized for fresh, quality goods that were estimated conservatively. Our recent auction realized approximately 35% over low estimate and included highlights such as a rare Jumeau 211 screamer that brought $37,375. A salesman sample ice cutter sold for $7,130 against a $1,000-1,500 estimate. A scale model locomotive exceeded its $3,000-5,000 estimate to sell for $10,350. A rare Hoyt’s clockwork animated picture sold for $9,200 against a $4,000-6,000 estimate. A Lehmann “Busy Coolies” toy estimated for $2,000-3,000 sold for $4,312. A Yellow Kid gum vendor brought $12,075 over its $5,000-10,000 estimate and a “Whiffs of Fragrance” perfumer brought $9,200 against a $5,000-8,000 estimate. If there were ever concerns over an uncertain economy, 2009 ardently proved otherwise showing strong bidder confidence.

This was our largest grossing antique & fine arts sale ever conducted at our Fairfield, Maine facility; with 1225 registered bidders representing 17 different countries. Along with a capacity crowd, active internet participation and a telephone bank that, in several occasions showed 16 people standing, bidding was very active and proved that fresh conservatively estimated quality goods are still in demand and can fetch strong prices.

June 26, 2009
Our June 26th Toy & Doll Auction Pre-Sale Estimate was $796,000, but the price realized was $1.3 Million!! The very first lot, #1000 was estimated at $800-$1,200 and sold after a brief, but brisk bidding battle for $1,207. Lot #1001, the very next lot estimated at $3,000-$4,000 sold for $14,350. Lot #1002, estimated at $2,000-$3,000 hammered at $3,450. And so it went all the way to a very impressive total of $1.3 Million! The performance of the sold items was 63% over low estimate. A most impressive sale indeed. The best results for a Julia Toy & Doll Auction in the last two and a half years. Despite the declining economy, not only did their Glass & Lamp Auction the week before perform at $1.8 Million but it was also the finest offering to date this year at a Glass & Lamp Auction anywhere in the world. The Firearms Auction performed equally and admirably in March grossing $11.5 Million and was probably one of the finest offerings of antique firearms ever. None of this is a fluke. Late in 2008 with the declining economy, the Julia management team made a decision to take a somewhat radical approach to the depressed economy. Their new business model: “charge less and give greater service to both the buyer and the seller.” The success of this new model as exhibited by the past three auctions is unquestionable. The Toy & Doll auction was extraordinarily appealing for diversity, outstanding condition, rarity and most importantly reasonable estimates with few or no reserves. This auction was a buying opportunity and boasted one of the largest crowds present at a Toy & Doll Auction in recent years. The much touted “Julia Stimulus Plan” featuring the most competitive commission structures in the industry (and a series of amenable benefits to both the buyers and sellers) has proven to be just what customers are looking for in this down economy. Andrew Truman is already working on consignments for the Fall Toy, Doll & Antique Advertising Auction, whether you have one item or an entire collection, call him immediately. June 19 & 20, 2009
The talk in the art glass world for weeks prior to our June 19th & 20th auction was that based on quality, rarity, diversity and value, this was the finest offering of rare lamps and art glass to take place this year anywhere, and indeed it was. There was a breath-taking array of superb items and the response, despite the economy, was simply terrific. As was fully expected, with this downturn in the economy, not everything sold and there were more bargains than there were 1-1/2 to 2 years ago when the economy was very upbeat. But the really exciting news about this auction was that A) the sale produced over $1.7 Million in sales; B) it was the largest crowd in attendance at a Julia Lamp & Glass auction for many years with bidders flying in from as far away as Israel to attend the sale, but C) most excitingly was some of the results. Some of the rare things saw tremendous participation and extremely strong prices. Whether you have one item or an entire collection, contact us immediately. Our marketing and promotion plan is exceeded by none, our terms are the lowest in the industry for expensive quality items and no one produces any stronger results. Call us today!

Another extraordinary auction in extraordinary times. The gross sales result of $11.5 Million Dollars was obtained on $8.7 Million Dollars worth of low estimate or $2.8 Million Dollars over low estimate. 45 items brought over $50,000! 12 items brought over $100,000! 9 items brought over $200,000! Three items brought over $500,000!. The phenomenal Murphy collection was extremely well received with lots of bidding competition and high prices on these rare and extraordinary items, but the Murphy collection was not the only thing that shined as great prices were obtained for many of the fine shotguns and sporting rifles, civil war items, great Winchesters, Class III and 20th Century Military items. Of course, not everything brought extraordinary prices, as was to be expected, there were a number of very good buys in this auction, and one of the strongest reasons in the world for passionate collectors of firearms to stay active in these particular turbulent times. This is the first time in ten years that collectors have had an opportunity to attain some true bargains and smart perceptive buyers will continue to pay particular attention to both auctions, gun shows, and gun dealers offerings. Just as there are great opportunities in our country today, in businesses and stocks and real-estate, there are great opportunities in the collectible field. The results of the October 2008 and now the 2009 March sale, once again reflect the tremendous passion, resilience and confidence of collectors of antique and collectable firearms. Our industry is still doing well, none of us are in line looking for bail out money, nor do we have to be concerned about egregious bonuses, Ponzi schemes and stock frauds. Kudos to the passion and enthusiasm of the gun collecting fraternity!

While the economic downturn has undoubtedly affected every aspect of American business, we are very pleased with the outcome of our fall Lamp & Glass auction totaling over $1.6 Million. It showed once again, that very high quality art glass and lighting have certain immunity to negative economic conditions. Highlighting the sale was a fantastic Tiffany Studios red tulip table lamp estimated at $70,000 to $100,000 and sold for $109,250 also in the area of fine lighting was a spectacular Gorham leaded table lamp of very large size and spectacular color. The lamp sold for $47,150. Handel reverse painted lamps were extremely strong with strong competitive bidding running the prices to very strong levels. An outstanding Handel Jungle Bird from the Gaba Estate sold for $15,812 against an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000 while a Handel blue Chinese Pheasant table lamp sold for $27,600 against an estimate of $15,000 to $20,000. Quality art glass also showed strong values with a spectacular Tiffany Studios pastel candlestick setting a new World Record for a piece of Tiffany pastel at $6,612. A fine monumental Daum Nancy swan vase estimated at $10,000-$15,000 sold for $18,400.

Quality and condition met with great enthusiasm from bidders at our fall 2008 toy, doll, advertising, and coin-op auction. The final gross was over $950,000 against a pre-auction estimate of items sold of approximately $637,000. Despite some feelings of economic uncertainty, the auction market for quality antiques remains vibrant and strong as evidenced by this recent sale. Highlights included the Geraldine Gaba Estate of Scottsdale, Arizona whose superb 50-year collection of dollhouses and miniatures was considered one of the finest collections of its type to hit the market in many years. This collection was joined by fine French dolls, German characters, a wide variety of slot machines and other coin-op, rare and desirable toys, music machines, quality advertising, salesman samples, and much more. With 40 years in the business, Julia’s offers tremendous expertise, a remarkable reputation for honest and fair dealing, and the most competitive commission rates in the industry.
