AIDEN LASSELL RIPLEY (American, 1896-1969) “MIDDLE DAM”. Outstanding watercolor spring/summer scene shows a large wooden dam with building having three fly fisherman, one on each side and one in the middle. This watercolor depicts Middle Dam on the Rapid River, one of the east coast best fishing rivers for trophy brook trout. The Rapid River is located in Oxford County in the western section of Maine. Signed lower left “A. Lassell Ripley”. Housed in a fine replacement gilt frame with white liner having an inner gold edge. The frame is from the Guido Frame Studio of Boston and taped to the back is the original old Vose Galleries of Boston label with artist name and title. Back of canvas has original inscription “W Peirce NY For Leata Rowan 4 Feb 1938″. Leata Rowan was the wife of Edward Beatty Rowan (1898-1946). WALDO PEIRCE (American, 1884-1970) TWELVE ENVELOPES WITH WATERCOLOR. Waldo Peirce was known for sending letters in envelopes that he drew watercolor sketches on. Some were complex scenes, others were simple doodles. The envelopes are all No. 10 size and date 1947 to 1962. Each envelope has a cancelled stamp and were sent to one of two people in Bangor, Maine. EMILE R. BEAULIEU (American, Mid 19th Century) NEW YORK HARBOR SCENE. Oil on canvas marine seascape shows a sailboat with a “4” on its back sail going towards a large three-mast ship with sails down. Other ships include a sailing yacht, another tall ship and side-wheel boat. A barrel buoy is seen in foreground with seagulls and a low bluff of land is seen in distance. Signed lower right “Beaulieu NY 59”. Beaulieu is listed in the Dictionary of Marine Artists and was active from 1850-1862 and exhibited at the National Academy of Design. HAMILTON HAMILTON (American, 1847-1928) THE BUTTERFLY CATCHER. Fabulous oil on canvas scene shows a young girl with long brown hair wearing a brown/red coat, blue pants and long stockings and shoes. She is kneeling on one knee and her hand is out grasping towards a butterfly that has landed on one of the flowers in a large bouquet of flowers which is held in a large blue urn on cement plinth. LOUIS MCCLELLAN POTTER (American, 1873-1912) LARGE BRONZE FIGURAL GROUP OF A NATIVE ESKIMO WITH RIFLE FOLLOWING FOUR DOGS. This fabulous bronze has a 16” h Eskimo in fur coat with a large collar and a fur hat with earmuffs. He holds a rifle in his right hand and is wearing mitts. Three Husky type dogs are seen directly in front and one beside. A naturalistic base is signed on the side “Louis Potter 1905”. Also signed on top corner “Copyright 1905 by Gorham Mfg Co.”. Pictured and numbered 471 and titled “Lariat Chase” Circa 1610 in The Schiffer Book of Bronzes by Berman. Parts of the clothing, saddle and ground are polychrome decorated in red, green and gold. JOHAN MULLER (19th Century) GETTING DIRECTIONS. Large oil on canvas scene shows a man in a four wheel carriage stopped to talk to two farmers who are by a wooden fence. A farm is seen beyond them on the right and barns on the left. Signed lower right. Housed in a copper colored gesso decorated wide frame. SIZE: 22-1/4” x 30”. THEODORE KLEEHAAS (German, 1854-1929) TAVERN CONVERSATION—-OUTSTANDING STANFORD WHITE DESIGN FRAME. Large oil on canvas tavern scene shows three men in German/Swiss attire seated at a round table looking over a two seated woman at the end of the table. A small dog looks on against a stucco wall with alcove, pictures and shelf. Signed lower right “Th. Kleehaas, Munchen”. The stretcher has a Jos. Bayerie, Munchen stamp. SIZE: 30” x 40”. CONDITION: Bottom 1” has some chipping, masking varnish. Otherwise good. FRAME: Housed in what we believe is a Stanford White design frame and attributed to the Newcomb-Macklin shop, circa 1910. The frame has a five stop fluted reeded border, an inner flat area which has many different borders and an inner five reeded section. R.S. (German, 19th/20th Century) PAIR OF CASTLE WATERCOLORS. Both show a large stone castle in fine detail. They are signed “R.S.” and one may be “St.”. Housed in gesso decorated gold frames with thick white mattes. High quality watercolors with a fine provenance. PROVENANCE: From the Joseph Pulitzer cottage “Chatwold” Bar Harbor, Maine to our consignor. SIGHT SIZE: 15-1/4″ x 10-3/4″. JOSEPH BEUYS (German, 1921-1986) ELECTRICITY. A composition collage with paper, cardboard, watercolor and cutouts. The theme appears to be electricity, which is depicted by wires coming from a telephone pole and connecting to a variety of sources having plusses and minuses. Signed in the center of a red flattened box, which is part of the composition. The box also has cutout word and number “Lach 12″. PAVEL TCHELITCHEW (Russian, 1898-1957) “SAVONAROLA”. Gouache design sketch shows three figures with long musical horns. The figures are in gray, blue, orange and red and have black trumpets. Bottom margin has title and “P. Tchelitchew Berlin”. Upper left has “S. Pauzer?”. This painting comes from the same collection that James D. Julia sold in 2004, which had two other examples from this artist and was acquired by the family from the artist in Europe. Housed in a flat mahogany thin frame with heavy white matte. SONIA DELAUNAY (Russian, French, 1885-1979) ABSTRACT DESIGN. Watercolor abstract design of green, red and blue splotches on a black background. Housed in a fine modern gilt and ebonized frame with double black matte having name tag. Back with a window which displays the Provenance stamp indicating authenticity. Includes a signed stamp by Charles Delaunay. Also a stamp indicating the Robert Perrier Collection. SIGHT SIZE: 6-3/4” x 7-1/4”. Light oil on board surrealistic scene shows a recumbent lion with large belly amongst tall grass with a small group of mushrooms and nuts which have been selectively eaten. Six squirrel-like animals walk away noticeably mad. All under a blue, pink and light colored sky. Signed lower left “G. Novoa 1977”. Housed in what appears to be its original carved weathered frame with linen liner. The back dust board has title and Wally Findley Galleries label. SIZE: 22” x 18”. PAUL DELVAUX (Belgian, 1897-1994) NUDES IN CLASSICAL RUINS. Oil on canvas scene shows eight nude women seen amongst classical white marble ruins. There is a variety of Oriental rugs on the marble tile floor, three of the ladies have colorful robes. All seen under a blue and cloud sky with mountain background and large tree. Signed bottom center right “P Delvaux 10-48”. Housed in a replacement modern carved gilt wood frame that is signed “Larson-Juhl”. REFERENCE: A similar scene Sotheby’s London, lot 76 Feb. 3, 2004 which was dated 1944. We are unsure if this is a post dated study or whether this is a later copy. SIZE: 25” x 30”. LOUIS-CLAUDE MALBRANCHE (French, 1790-1838) RING AROUND THE ROSY. Oil on canvas winter scene shows eight young girls playing ring around the rosy with one in the center and seven forming a ring. A dog is seated and looks on and a woman carrying a tall bucket walks toward them. They are seen in an inner courtyard, which opens out to view a house with fence and trees. Various barrels and brooms are seen resting up against the barn like structure. Signed lower right “Malbranche”. Housed in a period gilt gesso decorated frame. SIGHT SIZE: 9-1/4” x 12-1/4”. ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE (French, 1795-1875) PAIR OF BRONZE LION AND TIGER BOOKENDS. Lion and tiger bronzes mounted on rosewood bases which serve as bookends. Tigre Marchant, the other is Lion Marchant. “F. Barbedienne Fondour France” inscribed on base and signed “Bayre” on base on both. A very nice set of bronze bookends. JEAN DIDIER DEBUT (French, 1824-1893) AMPHITRITE THE SEA GODDESS. Large 19th Century bronze figural group shows a partial nude standing woman with arm upstretched holding a swath of cloth. She stands with one leg forward in a large scallop shell which rests on two dolphin fish. Two full putti are beside her. All resting on a round molded edge bronze base. Signed on the bottom side “Debut”. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Maria, M. Viveiros of New Bedford, Massachusetts. SIZE: 30” h. ADRIEN-ETIENNE GAUDEZ (French, 1845-1902) “DUO DIFFICILE”. Outstanding large bronze on tall bronze floor stand depicts two boys learning to play a violin and flute. Round base bronze has a decorative cartouche with “Duo Difficile Par A. Gaudez Hors Concours”. Top of the base signed “A. Gaudez” and the scene shows one boy seated on a fancy stool playing a flute and having an open music book on his knee. Another boy holding a violin at shoulder points his bow at the music book and gestures. Top can rotate and is signed on the side “Tiffany & Co.”. Bronze base has upper hub decorated with a berry and leaf vine. Four legs are topped with a profile of a fancy maiden. Animal paw feet on round disks. Decorative stretchers and a central four arm finial at center of base. A wonderful presentation and nice subject matter. PROVENANCE: Estate of Maria M. Viveiros, New Bedford, Massachusetts. MARIUS JEAN ANTONIN MERCIE (French, 1845-1916) DAVID VAINQUEUR. Outstanding life size bronze with dark brown patina shows David after dispatching Goliath with sling and stone approached the fallen giant, unsheathed his sword and severed his head. Mercie has depicted the victor having one foot on Goliath’s gaping head while resheathing his sword. Originally cast in five sizes by Barbedienne and later a life size casting was done by Thiebaut. Mercie won first prize in Rome in 1870 which was a totally nude figure. The later and different sizes incorporated a loin cloth as this one depicts. The base is signed “A + Mercie” and does not carry a foundry mark that we can find. We are not sure of the foundry of this casting or the issue date. PROVENANCE: From a fine Camden, Maine home. SIZE: 69” h x 36” at widest. CONDITION: There is some reminisce of plaster still in the grooves but generally this is in very good condition. 9-28843 (15000-25000)

REMBRANDT BUGATTI (Italian, 1885-1916) MAJESTIC STAG. Outstanding bronze sculpture of a walking elk with large antlers holding head up majestically. Stag walks on a naturalistic flat rectangular base and is signed “Bugatti” and stamped “Cire Perove A. A. Hebraro” with a “2” in a circle. SIZE: Base is 20” x 5”. 19-1/4” h. CONDITION: Very good. Bronze shows a standing horse with a man looking behind dressed in a tribal type military dress. He carries a gun behind him and holds the reins in his other hand. OLD MASTER (European, Before 1800) THE CARD PLAYERS. Large oil on canvas scene shows several men playing cards in an outdoor setting. One man has Roman type helmet with red and yellow robe. The other in uniform with scabbard. A peasant with hat also plays. Three other men watch all against a rocky outcropping with blue sky. Unsigned. Unframed. SIZE: 37-1/2” x 55”. AFTER CARLO MARATTA (Italian, 1625-1713) OLD MASTER – IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. Early 19th, possibly 18th Century unsigned oil on canvas copy of the famous work by Carlo Maratta that sits in San Isidoro, Basilica, Rome. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. The infant holds a long spear with the tip at a snakes head at her feet. Cherubs and angels surround them in a heavenly type state. Housed in a good gilt fancy wood frame with name tag and dates. ATTRIBUTED TO FRANZ FRANCKEN, THE YOUNGER (Flemish, 1581-1642) CHRIST WITH THE MONEY CHANGERS IN THE TEMPLE. Oil on wood panel scene shows Christ next to a man with large hat with crown and beard. He points to a side alter with gold coins and bag. A number of other well dressed gentleman are seen behind him in a fancy interior setting. An arched open window looks out to castle and landscape. A monkey is seen in right corner, a small boy in red outfit and dagger in left. Housed in a good stained and gilt molded wood frame. Back of the panel has two 1-1/2” red wax seals. PROVENANCE: Gittelson Gallery 1950; Guttman Gallery frame. Sold by James D. Julia, Inc. August 3rd, 1995 from the collection of Joseph & Hazel Marcus. A three page typed description which was compiled by the Marcus’s accompanies painting. SIZE: 18-1/2” x 16-3/4”. CONDITION: There are three butterfly repairs to back of wood panel. WILLIAM HEMSLEY (British, 1819-1893) “CUP AND BALL”. Oil on wood panel scene shows a boy seated on a wood stool holding a stick with cup on top having a tethered ball hanging. The boy looks down on it, concentrating and wears a red cap. A girl is standing beside, smiling and looking on. A younger girl is seated also looking on. Housed in what appears to be its original frame which is “as is” and has an old artist tag with title “Cup and Ball William Hemsley, R.B.A.”. MILTON JAMES BURNS (American, 1853-1933) ILLUSTRATION – “SCHOOL OF SHARKS”. Fine monochromatic oil illustration for Charles Lewis Shaws story, this being the illustration on page 14 “The Thrasher Shark in its Agony Gave a Leap out of the Water”. Large illustration shows two men on a capsized boat with a caught shark being held by chain and line by both men. Two other sharks are seen circling and an oncoming boat with man with harpoon is close. Signed “Burns 96”. Information on whitened border and pencil inscription on back. He did magazine covers for the New Yorker and Cosmopolitan. ANNA ELIZABETH KLUMPKE (American, 1856-1942) THE RED KERCHIEF. Outstanding large oil on canvas portrait of a French girl wearing a red kerchief on her black hair. She wears a white shirt with red dress and black apron. One hand holds small spray of flowers at side, the other rests on stool. She is looking off to the side. Signed lower left “A E Klumpke 1886”. It was during the time period from 1882 to 1891 that Anna was exhibiting at the Paris Salon and also was a medal winner in Versailles in 1886. After 1898 she lived with Rosa Bonheur until Bonhuer’s death and she inherited the Estate and founded the Rosa Bonhuer Memorial Art School and Museum in Fontainebleau, France. She wears a yellow dress with white edges and long gold gloves. Signed upper left “Bert Phillips” against the bright red background. Phillips is best known for his Indian subjects and this probably is from an earlier period when he was in Europe. A wonderful portrait by a very accomplished artist. GEORGE OSCAR BAKER (American, 1882-1948) THE MAMMY’S PREFERENCE. Outstanding oil on canvas interior scene shows an elegant lady in rose colored evening gown with white trim. She sits at a dressing table having a candle lamp, mirror and powder jars. She holds up a red necklace to her to see how it looks while her mammy holds a gold necklace and stands behind her wearing a red kerchief, gold glasses and a colorful green shirt with purple apron. The wall has part of an oval painting and a long flower decorated curtain. Signed lower right “George Baker”. Housed in a magnificent deep multi-tier gesso decorated period gilt frame. EDWIN LORD WEEKS (American, 1849-1903) “MOOR IN BLUE, RESTING”. Oil on canvas backed by cardboard study shows a man in Moorish dress sitting back toward the viewer on a large rock. He wears a blue and white traditional outfit with fez. In period writing on the back of the cardboard which appears to be original to the framing and the painting “Moor (in blue), Resting by E. L. Weeks” and “Out of door” Study”. “Rock and background by A. S. T. 1905. (On a mountain pass in Morocco, Path leads round the boulder down into valley”. Housed in its period gilt wood molded frame. Signed lower right “Childe Hassam” in pencil and also “09” below the penned title on bottom left. On back is an unsigned 7” x 9” pencil sketch of a harbor scene. AFTER GEORGE WESLEY BELLOWS (American, 1882-1925) “DEMPSEY – FIRPO”. Large oil on masonite fight scene after the famous lithograph by Bellows of the same title. The scene shows Dempsey falling through the ropes after being hit hard by Firpo. A large group of spectators is seen around the ring. The painting has a silver plaque on bottom right which states “Dempsey-Firpo Sept. 14, 1923 Gift of National Equipment Corp. Fall River, Mass”. The painting has a flat wide pine frame and the painting bears no signature. The history is that this was displayed in a bar room in the New Bedford/Fall River, Massachusetts area. This fight was very controversial due to Dempsey being out of the ring for 10 seconds and coming back and in two rounds winning the fight. SIZE: 48” x 77”. CONDITION: Generally good. Accompanying painting is a pencil signed artist print of the painting. Also history of the sitter which indicates that the painting was purchased in 1964 at the Camden, Maine Antique Show. She wears a ruffled lace edge blue dress, a lace bonnet, a multi-strand twisted coral necklace with blue bow-tie and blue shoes with blue bows. She holds her doll in her lap resting on one arm. The doll wears a fancy red dress with blue sleeves and gloves. Beside the girl is a wonderful handled basket filled with fruit including green grapes and plums. Housed in a molded wood gilt frame. FINE PAIR OF NEW ENGLAND WINDSOR CONTINUOUS ARM BOW-BACK CHAIRS. Probably Rhode Island origin having been brought down to its old grain painted finish as they previously were painted white. ANTIQUE STEP-BACK CUPBOARD IN RED PAINT. Interesting form having two glass doors with curved mullions which when open reveal one shelf with a smaller shaped shelf. Below the doors are three small drawers side by side with no drawer pulls. Bottom section has two drawers over two carved paneled doors with no hardware. All constructed in pine with a dovetailed and mortise tendon case. Piece has a simple cutout front leg and decorative crown molding. Probably eastern European. SIZE: 84” h x 41” w x 21” d. SAMUEL FINLEY MORSE BADGER (American, 1873-1919) PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER “FRED GRAY”. Outstanding oil on canvas ship portrait of the schooner “Fred Gray”. Two-mast black hull schooner sailing left to right with five figures aboard. Name of the ship on the bow and the stern. The Fred Gray was built in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1869 and it’s home port was Portland, Maine and was owned by H.M. Sargent. Sailing by a white lighthouse with three-story gray building on a small island which is Execution Rocks. Execution Rocks Light is on the west end of Long Island Sound. First lit in 1850, it is still there as seen in this painting and was automated in 1979. All under a blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower left “SFM Badger 94”. CONDITION: Yellow patina with some darker areas. REFERENCE: “Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists” by Stuart M. Frank, page 119. Lists Josiah Shefield Jr. circa 1828-1835. He describes as well as pictures a tooth in full page illustration on the previous page and mentions three other known teeth by this artist. Shefield was born in 1807 on Nantucket and he made a voyage out of New Bedford on the ship Timoleon 1831-1835. PROVENANCE: These two teeth were recently found in a house in upper New York State on the shores of Lake Ontario. These are a new discovery and we believe that they have never been out of the family that they came from. They are being sold as a pair. These teeth have been reviewed in person by Stuart M. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT CARVED AND GILT WOOD CATHEAD FROM THE U.S.S. CONSTITUTION. This carving was removed from the U.S.S. Constitution at the time that it was docked in Boston Harbor. It was given to our consignor to completely restore and ready for its replacement. The square cat head carving was affixed to the projecting pieces of timber near the bow which served as crane booms for hoisting the anchors to the rail. They were located on the spar deck, forward of the furthest most gun in placements. Commonly known as catheads, they derived their name from the carvings or cast iron caps in the form of cats or lions, the cat in the 18th Century, being a Royal pet. These decorative heads were often plated in gold and were one of the few ornaments found on a warship. Once raised, the anchors would then be secured to the catheads until they were ordered cat off again. REFERENCE: For a similar carving made by John Bellamy see page 85 in “John Haley Bellamy Carver of Eagles” by Yvonne Brault Smith. PROVENANCE: The refurbishing of this carving was directed from a Navy Admiral to our client but was never accepted back or work paid for by the Navy. OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL DESIGN SKETCH FOR THE WYMAN’S FANCY BLUEBERRIES LABEL. Bright gouache and water colored label has bush of blueberries with two birds on branches against a top blue background and decorative bottom border. The following is on the painting “Wyman’s Fancy Blueberries Extra Quality Packed at Cherryfield, Washington Co. ME by J & EA Wyman”. Someone at a later date has put two pencil lines through Cherryfield and has written Milbridge next to it. We are not sure whether this is original to the piece or whether a family member changed it when Wyman’s moved to Milbridge, Maine. Housed in a modern partial gilt molded wood frame with white matte indicating “Original design sketch Forbes Litho, Boston 1891”. PROVENANCE: The J. GILT HORSE WEATHERVANE ATTRIBUTED TO F.W. FISKE “MOUNTAIN BOY”. Running horse weathervane has cast ears and gilt molded copper body. Comes with its original decorative iron and gilt letters and standard with wood balls and metal balls. PROVENANCE: We took this off the J. Hollis Wyman Estate home in Milbridge, Maine. SIZE: 30” l. CONDITION: Weathervane appears to have been touched up with a gold paint but the original gilt surface can be seen in parts. IMPORTANT AND RARE TALL CASE CLOCK BY AARON WILLARD, BOSTON. Outstanding Aaron Willard tall clock has fine inlaid Roxbury case. Original dial signed “Aaron Willard Boston”. Two weight brass eight-day movement having a moon and calendar dial. The weights are filled tin cans with remnants of original paint. Pendulum and key are present. Outstanding cast flower finials with balls. Inside back of clock has paper label “Clock dials Manufactured by Willard & Nolen Washington Street, Boston”. Hood having nice fretwork top with fluted square plinths with brass finials. Line inlaid door flanked by stop fluted columns with brass capitol. Waist having stop fluted corner columns terminating in brass capitols. Molded edge line inlaid door with brass escutcheon plate. Square base having line inlay and corner dark and light inlaid fan. All supported by four ogee feet and molded base. Dial having corner hand painted flowers. PROVENANCE: Found in the front hall of the J. Hollis Wyman Estate, Milbridge, Maine (State Senator & Wild Blueberry King). SIZE: 98-1/2” h x 19-1/2” w x 10” d.
