ABBOTT FULLER GRAVES (American, 1859-1936) HARBOR LOOKOUT. Outstanding oil on canvas summer scene shows two young ladies, one standing wearing pink dress and matching hat. The other seated beside with white dress, blue scarf and flower decorated hat. They look out over a blue harbor with sailboat racing by. A large town/city is in background with large center building. Other sailboats are seen against building. The women are surrounded by colorful tall flowers and they sit on a large granite outcropping. Signed lower right “Abbott Graves”. Housed in a gesso decorated gilt frame which is not original but period. To our knowledge, this painting has never been offered for sale and remains in its original untouched condition. Outstanding large oil on canvas winter scene shows a gray house with porch having three men who have stopped by from hauling logs and are talking with the lady of the house who has a large coffee pot in her hands and holds open the door. The two-horse drawn log wagon is seen next to mailbox on road which leads into valley dotted with New England farm houses. Rolling hills under a gray sky. Signed lower left “Paul Sample”. Housed in its original decorated carved wood frame with linen liner. Titled in pencil and signed on back stretcher. Also the back of canvas has a 27th Annual Art Director’s Exhibition label under the classification of Advertising Art Submitted by Benton & Bowles. REFERENCE: This painting was used as the focal point in one of the “Part of the American Scene” Maxwell House Coffee print ads. “Coffee time is any time when neighbors pass a friendly house on a chill winter day. A Welcome interlude in a long, cold journey. And because Maxwell House is America’s favorite… coffee time is Maxwell House time wherever you go. Painted in the Vermont hills by Paul Sample”. A copy of this advertisement accompanies the painting. This is one of four paintings for this campaign. PROVENANCE: A General Foods commission from Benton & Bowles Agency. It hung behind the Maxwell House coffee product manager’s desk and upon retirement he was given the painting and it is being consigned by him and has never been offered on the market before. Her elbow rests on the edge of the table and her hand is under her chin. Behind her is the New York skyline in back of a small body of water with several rowboats and people. Signed lower left “Philipp”. Housed in a fine partial gilt carved wood frame, which is probably original. The frame has label “Made by D. Matt New York, N Y”. Also black marker “NYAA 193”. JAMES DANIEL TORLAKSON (American, 1951-) “ASHLAND AVENUE 1973”. Oil on canvas realist scene shows a street side view of two side by side modern houses with cars parked in front of a cement sidewalk and curb. Shadows are cast from a sunlit view. The back stretcher has a John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, California label indicating artist and title. Signed lower right. Housed in a black frame which is set away from the edge of the canvas. Torlakson is known for his realist watercolors and an oil painting rarely comes on the market as large as this. UNSIGNED (American, First half of the 20th Century) INDUSTRIAL CITYSCAPE. Unsigned oil on wood paneling shows a colorful industrial city with many smoke stacks and buildings, oil tanks and warehouses in the foreground with many buildings and a water tower in the background. These are all rendered in vibrant colors. The sky is seen in a pallet of purple, aqua and white displaying plumes of smoke billowing from the smoke stacks. The colors are reminiscent of a Theodore Earl Butler pallet. Found in the mid-west. Housed in a carved gilt period frame. The panel has no markings except in the upper left corner “471”. AFTER GEORGE WESLEY BELLOWS (American, 1882-1925) “DEMPSEY – FIRPO”. Large oil on masonite fight scene after the famous lithograph by Bellows of the same title. The scene shows Dempsey falling through the ropes after being hit hard by Firpo. A large group of spectators is seen around the ring. The painting has a silver plaque on bottom right which states “Dempsey-Firpo Sept. 14, 1923 Gift of National Equipment Corp. Fall River, Mass”. The painting has a flat wide pine frame and the painting bears no signature. The history is that this was displayed in a bar room in the New Bedford/Fall River, Massachusetts area. This fight was very controversial due to Dempsey being out of the ring for 10 seconds and coming back and in two rounds winning the fight. SIZE: 48” x 77”. CONDITION: Generally good. WILLIAM JAMES GLACKENS (American, 1870-1938) “ROCKPORT, MASS 1936 NO. 3”. Outstanding oil on board beach scene depicting ten bathers on a sandy and rock strewn beach with large yellow house on rocky point with sailboat off rocks. Foreground scene shows people with multi-colored bathing suits and men wearing hats with summer attire. Child in blue suit plays with white dog. Blue and green ocean has blue hulled white sail sailboat. A wonderful impressionistic scene with vibrant colors. Pencil signed and titled on reverse. Two Adams Davidson Galleries labels affixed to back. One indicating a title “Bathers at Rockport, 1936” and being exhibited in the “Washington Collects Exhibition February 19-April 7 1981” and illustrated as figure 32 in the catalog. The other label, which appears to be newer indicated title “Beach at Rockport”. Housed in a fine replacement gold gesso decorated frame. Accompanying this painting is a signed letter from Ira Glackens dated October 1978 to Anne Denton Blair on his stationary “Dear Annie – This little study of a beach, measuring 12″ x 16″ was painted by father at Rockport, Mass, in 1936. I remember the water as frigid, having visited Pa & Ma for a few days there, & this place was better for painting than bathing! There exists several studies of this place, but feel lucky you do not have to go in that icy water! yours affectionately, Ira Glackens”. THADDEUS WELCH (American, 1844-1919) LOUIS PRANG’S DAUGHTER AND GRANDCHILDREN. Outstanding oil on board family portrait scene shows a young woman in white dress and yellow hat standing beside two daughters, one placing a wreath of flower around a small lamb and the other daughter standing next to their dog. They stand in a green grass area between two stone walls with blossoming apple trees framing a clearing which shows the family homestead. Signed lower left “T. Welch 85”. Index card on back gives history of people in the painting as follows: “Rosa Prang Heinzen 1853-1943 daughters of Louis Prang wife of Karl Heinzen (son of Karl Heinzen German Rev.) GEORGE HENRY BOUGHTON (American, 1833-1905) “INDIFFERENCE”. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a flower, and grass covered field with two ladies in colorful dress with parasols and bonnets. They walk past a gentleman in blue long-tail formal coat with white pants and white top hat. Nine white ducks are seen between them and beyond the ducks are nine figures which are playing a ball game, possibly cricket or baseball. The hillside background supports a large multi-chimney house with light reflecting in the windows. Housed in its original gilt gesso decorated frame with wooden painted name tag which has title, artist and the following poem “When my hair is gray, then shall I be wise then, thank heaven I shall not care for bronze brown eyes.” SIZE: 18-1/4” x 36-1/4”. CHANSONETTA STANLEY EMMONS (19th Century) LAKESIDE SCENE. This folky oil on panel done by the mother of the famous Kingfield, Maine photographer and artist Chansonetta Stanley Emmons Chansonetta’s two brothers were the famed originators of the Stanley Steamer automobile but more importantly the Stanley dry plate used in photography. This folky painting depicts a cottage by a lakeside with mountainous background and a sailboat out on the lake. Signed in the center, “NETTA STANLEY, 1875”. Framed in a Victorian gilt gessoed frame. FABULOUS LARGE 18TH CENTURY BUCKET BENCH WITH CUPBOARD. The one piece bench has large shelved base with front shaped apron with shaped sides and half moon cutouts on each end. The sides extend to a inset double door cupboard with turned knobs and shelved interior. The top displays side dovetails and has a small backsplash. The color is a slate blue and has splash staining to sides. Backboards to top section have beaded edge and may have been an early replacement. SIZE: 56” h x 23-3/4” d x 50” w. FINE MAINE REDWARE COVERED STEW POT ATTRIBUTED TO NORCROSS POTTERY. Brown glaze having the telltale features of the bulging neck and vertical rim. Norcross pottery was from Farmington, Maine. GOOD PAINTED SHERATON TWO TIER DRESSING STAND. Original yellow paint with green highlights. The D-shaped top supports a set back box with side by side drawers. Small scrolled back splash. SPONGE DECORATED LIFT TOP BLANKET CHEST. The large pine chest has lidded till, butt hinges and dovetailed construction. It rests on an applied molded bracket base. OUTSTANDING 19TH CENTURY REDWARE ADAM & EVE FIGURE. Probably Pennsylvania. The figures of Adam & Eve stand next to a red apple tree trunk that sprouts five apple and leaf branches. A snake winds around the tree with his head poking out of the top and holding a white apple.. All set on an oval concave base and all over paint decoration.
