NEW ENGLAND MEMORIAL WATERCOLOR OF MR. BENJAMIN GUILD. Circa 1800. Possibly Boston. The watercolor mourning picture depicting a central tomb being mourned over by young lady in yellow ribbon tied Empire dress, the tomb set before a small reflecting pool framed by classical willow tree, a cemetery in the near middle ground and hills in the background. In the sky, partially hidden in cloud, a celestial spirit. “Sacred I’ll keep thy dear remains/In memory of Mr. Benjamin Guild who departed/ this life Decbr 2nd 1800 AE 33 yrs/Celestial spirits hover oer his tomb/Deck it with garlands of amaranthine/ blooms”. CONDITION: With some overall discoloration to paper, especially in area of sky due to acid reaction to backboards. Craquelure in areas where watercolor is heaviest. NEW ENGLAND SILK ON LINEN SAMPLER OF SALLY “SHEPLEAFED”, JULY 7, 1811. Wrought with three rows of alphabet in capital and lower case above a line of Arabic numerals in dark brown followed by two rows of the alphabet in script followed by four lines of verse which read “Youth’s the springtime of our years/Short the rapid end appears/Let’s improve the fleeting hours/Virtue’s noblest fruits be ours” stitched in shades of light blue and brown followed by a line stitched with her name and date the quilt was completed. The bottom a pictorial line of a fruit tree flanked by a flower stem and a tree full of birds all within a zigzag border further surrounded by a zigzag and acorn border in blue and cream silk, all within a S-scrolled outer border. SIZE: Sight: 18-3/4″ x 16″. PROVENANCE: From the private collection of Dorothy-Lee Jones. THREE MINIATURE PORTRAITS. Second quarter, 19th century for all. 1) An oval bust portrait of a young man on ivory with high collar and black cravat with dark hair, blue eyes and pronounced features. 2) An oval bust portrait on ivory of a younger man with white winged collar shirt, white cravat and stick pin. Mounted in a marbleized or grained frame of the period. The paper backing affixed to the backboard of the frame with illegible script, identifying the sitter. 3) A portrait of a mother and child. The woman in an empire, white lace dress with blue scarf. The portrait appears to be a paint-heightened transfer on porcelain, mounted within an oval gilt metal frame, decorated overall with floral garlands. Attached to the back of the frame backing is a handwritten label, “AFTER PAINTING SIG A. LAUVREU (?)..LADY DOVER”. SIZE: 1) 2-1/4″ h x 1-3/4″ w; 2) 2-1/2″ h x 2″ w; 3) 4″ h x 3-1/4″ w. GROUP OF WEDGWOOD AND ENGLISH TEA WARES. Late 18th & 19th century. A shaped feather edge serving dish with scrolled handle impressed “WEDGWOOD” and additionally impressed with a “B”. A pair of lavender transfer-decorated cups and saucers with fanciful peacocks, each cup applied with strap handle and signed “WEDGWOOD” with a mixture of capital and lower case letters (1759-1800). A Wedgwood cup and saucer molded with vinery in an ivory glaze with gilded borders from the Levy Collection. A Swansea scenic paint decorated cup and saucer of English manor houses, gilt decorated and with blue borders. UNIQUE & IMPORTANT NATURAL CRYSTAL CARVING OF TRIBUTE TO EMPRESS DOWAGER CIXI. Circa 1894. This rare example was a birthday gift to the Empress Dowager Cixi in celebration of her 60th birthday (Oct. 10, 1894) by Prince Duan Aixinjueluo Zaiyi (1856-1922), nephew of Emperor Xianfeng (reign 1850-1861). This fanciful clear crystal carving depicting a central bearded Buddha standing with a walking staff in his right hand, a censor at his feet. Above his head is a rendering of a winged dragon beneath flying bats. A figure of a youth holding a fruit is above his right shoulder and an inscribed Fu character is above his left shoulder. To his left a deer, making an offering of a lingzhi or mushroom. On his right, above the stylized tree with jade green leaves, is a heron. The central figure standing on a rocky plinth is partially concealed behind these jade colored leaves, the natural rockwork also of a jade green color. When viewed from the rear the upper half of the carving is rendered with cloud bands centering a SHOU character at the apex, while the base clearly depicts a continuation of the tree branches. The tree roots continuing into the rockwork base. The whole mounted on a stylistic carved hardwood base of later vintage. A truly rare and fine example. SIZE: 20″ h x 13-1/2″ w.
