BOXED FISCHER “FLAPPING WING” BLERIOT AIRPLANE TIN W/U TOY. An awesome toy from the early 20th century manufactured by Fischer who produced many unique and interesting toys. This particular piece retains its original box with a picture of the toy on the lid as well as the paper instructions. The mechanism contained under the pilot when wound would activate the front and rear propellers and as it rolled upon the ground the wings would give the illusion of flapping and taking this toy airborne. The airplane body and pilot are of high quality lithography and the propellers and rudder are of celluloid. A unique form as well as a very desirable and highly sought after toy. It is a rarity to still have the original box and instructions! SIZE: Approx. 10″ l excluding rudder. CONDITION: Very fine plus. 1-11521 (3,500-5,500)

LARGE CLOCKWORK NODDER OF BLACK DUDE. This fellow with a papier mache head has extremely well molded facial characteristics such as high cheek bones, arched eyebrows, wide nose, oversized lips and pronounced pointed chin. He almost looks as though he has a scowl. Dressed in period clothing (trousers possibly older replacement), he sports a gray top hat covering his black hair. Obviously these were more likely used as some sort of “trade stimulator” in a store setting, rather than being a toy for a child. Being of German manufacture from the first quarter of the 20th century, these items are highly sought after by collectors of black memorabilia, country store collectors, toys collectors, etc. SIZE: 35″ t. CONDITION: Overall good to very good. Some fading and dustiness to clothing. Papered covered base shows some wear and distress. Clockwork mechanism fully functional. 1-11334 (1,500-2,000)

MILLS 25¢ “EXTRAORDINARY” FLOOR MODEL GOLF BALL SLOT MACHINE. As previously mentioned golf ball vendor/gambling machines became quite popular in the 1930s and 40s and were usually found in the club houses of country clubs. This particular model is known as the Mills “Extraordinary” which, as a golf ball vendor, only came in a floor model stand. Hidden in the cabinet underneath is a ramp way holding 75-100 golf balls. The mechanism was originally powered by a battery, but was converted to electric at some point in its life. The payout mechanism, though partially mechanical, is primarily electronic relying on making a series of electronic “contacts” to effect a payout. The machine either came with the normal fruit strips or the golf strips, this particular model has the typical cherries, oranges, plums, etc. A small award card next to the reel windows indicates potential winners. A visual jackpot is on the lower front casting displaying golf balls. In reality these are only for show. Machine has had a total restoration including reel strips and award card and expert and costly restoration. Wooden cabinet with veneered tiger striping to the wood and the castings being painted in the appropriate brown wrinkle finish. Machine has smooth action and payout mechanism is complete. SIZE: 19″ w x 15″ d x 59″ t. CONDITION: Excellent plus restored condition. 1-11317 (6,000-7,000)

Please Note: We maintain that this is a salesman sample base. At the time the salesman attached the toy Gem machine to the top, they have been together since their genesis. It is an outstanding unit.

Correction: It has come to our attention that the American Gem sewing machine mechanism on the top of this table is in actuality a toy made long ago for children. And as such, this is not a salesman sample for a complete American Gem sewing machine. However, we have concluded that while the sewing mechanism on top is a toy, the base is not. The base is most definitely a salesman sample for a well designed full size sewing machine base, which could be raised and put on casters so it could be easily rolled throughout the room or dropped down on its legs and be secured in place. It’s obvious that the seller of the full size bases must have, with a certain amount of effort adapted a toy from the period to this base so it could illustrate how their mechanism would work. Because of its detail, it is far more exacting than what you would see in a toy. The base is unquestionably an old base. This toy was not put on the base recently to make it look like a miniature or salesman sample. The two components have been together from very early on. As such, it is still a salesman sample; it’s just not a salesman sample for the American Gem sewing machine. It is a salesman sample for the base and/or the lifting mechanism. This is unquestionably a rare item and we feel a very beautiful piece of early American industrialization. We are also revising the presale estimate to $2,000-4,000.

SALESMAN SAMPLE AMERICAN GEM SEWING MACHINE. The machine itself is constructed of cast iron and mounted to a wooden table top which is supported by an ornate cast iron treadle base. The machine is enameled in black with painted floral decorations and gilt lettering. The base is also enameled in black with porcelain caster wheels and a foot activated locking mechanism. This piece is in “as found” untouched original condition and still retains what appears to be the original leather drive belt. A true rarity. Considering the dimensions and the craftsmanship of this piece, there is no doubt whatsoever that this was manufactured as a salesman sample and not a child’s sewing machine. PROVENANCE: Originally from a wealthy Baltimore family who accumulated/collected many items before, during, and after The Great Depression. SIZE: 15″ h x 10″ l x 6″ w.
