(.955 Groove diameter, 11 groove Enfield type rifling) 4″ Chambers. 24″ Fine Damascus bbls, swamped at center with slight flare toward muzzles, are fitted with full length flat rib with dolls head extension. Rear portion behind single standing leaf express rear sight marked for 50 yards, is file cut. Central portion of rib is engraved “Presented to Mirza Toffal Ali Beg Khan Bahadur by Nawab Salar Jung Mukhtar-ul Mulk, Prime Minister of Hyderabad, Ootagamund, June 15, 1885”. Silver bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into rib. Top of right bbl is engraved with H&H New Bond street address. Top of left is engraved “Winners of All the “Field” Rifle Trials London 1883″. Breech ends are engraved with wide acanthus bands behind 2-3/8″ triangles of exceptionally well cut scrolling acanthus with floral centers. Matching bands are at muzzles. Gun is numbered “2” on top of dolls head extension, top tang, and on forend iron. Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 6 bore. SNs are stamped on bottoms of bbls. A large sling eye is soldered to bottom rib. Massive case hardened Jones underlever round bar action (almost 3-1/2″ across breech face) has nicely filed fences, and is fitted with rebounding back action locks by Brazier sporting large, flat bodied, serpentine hammers with dolphin heads. Top tang extends over comb. Action and locks are engraved with 30% coverage well cut sprays of scroll, as background and accent to very well rendered scenes of big game animals, many for which this rifle would be suited. Right side of action depicts a rhinoceros with large deciduous and palm trees in background. Left side depicts an elephant strolling through open savannah with some trees and mountain in background. A bear in similar background is on left lockplate, and a well limned tiger burns bright from the right. A fine portrait of a lion is on top of action between hammers. SN and “2” are on trigger guard tang which extends to horn grip cap. Fiddle figured and lightly streaked dense European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/8″ over Silver type pad, and features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, point pattern checkering with mullered borders at grip, and a sling eye, matching but smaller than that on bottom of bbl, on toe line. Central portion of cheekpiece has inset gold circle engraved with complex monogram including the large letters “S” and “J” intertwined with smaller letters “M” and “K” and “JUS”. (This rifle is almost identical, except for some nuances of engraving, with four bore rifle no. 8333, made for the Nizam of Hyderabad, and pictured and described on pages 67-69 in HOLLAND & HOLLAND THE ROYAL GUNMAKER by Donald Dallas. Factory records indicate that both rifles were ordered through Rogers, Rock & Co., H&H’s Indian agents. This rifle was undoubtedly part of a large shipment of big bore rifles for various Indian princes.) Matching broad splinter forend has pivoting lever release. Drop at heel: approx 3-5/16″, drop at comb: approx 2-1/4″. Weight: 21 lbs 4 oz. LOP: 14-3/8”. PROVENANCE: Copy of factory ledger page, confirming specs and stating rifle was regulated with 14 drams of powder in a spherical ball. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain over 80% orig Damascus brown with some areas of further browning and discoloration with a number of light marks and dings. Action and locks retain 60 – 70% orig case hardening color with some brown staining and high edges silvered. Top of action colors are vivid, fading and turning brown along grip strap. Trigger guard is essentially all gray to brown patina with traces of dark color hardening under opening lever. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish over numerous marks and dings, both heavy and light. Sharp edges are slightly rounded. Wood is somewhat below metal at top of grip, which shows a number of well done repairs. Checkering nicely re-cut. Forend wood is fine, checkering re-cut, with a small chip at right front of bbl channel. Pad is an old replacement, fitted to orig curve, and factory specs state rifle was originally made with a “recoil buttplate”. Bores are excellent, very shiny with sharp rifling throughout, with one or two minor imperfections, most likely small flaws in Damascus. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. An exceptionally cool big bore. 48568-1 MGM31 (60,000-90,000) – Lot 2211

EXCEPTIONALLY FINE, HIGH ORIGINAL CONDITION, GIBBS/ METFORD FARQUHARSON LONG RANGE TARGET RIFLE WITH ORIGINAL SIGHTS AND WOODEN CASE.

SN 93. Cal. .461 Gibbs no. 2. This plainly finished example of one of the most famous target rifles of all time has 36″ tapered round bbl with front sight mounting block 2″ back from muzzle, and is engraved on top rear “Metford’s Patent, 708. George Gibbs, 29, Corn Street, Bristol.” Birmingham proofs are on left rear, and stamped with “48″. Metford number refers to the famous gain twist semi-smooth rifling, that was very highly regarded by all match shooters for at least two decades in the late 1800′s. This bbl is unusual in that it has a projection which extends over the breech block when it is in closed position, to make a better seal. No other example of this projection is illustrated or discussed in any of the books on single shot rifles. Beautifully polished and filed case hardened action has rear mounted pivoting safety on right side of action which is stamped “Farquharson’s Patent 93″ (use number). Left side is engraved “George Gibbs Bristol”. Unusual for a target rifle, the horn capped full pistol grip buttstock is of beautifully figured and streaked Circassian walnut, and measures 14-1/8″ over orig case hardened steel buttplate. There is a vacant silver oval on toe line. Point pattern checkering is at about 24 LPI with mullered borders. Forend attaches to bbl with side nail through steel escutcheons, as is found only on very early Gibbs rifles, and ends in a horn tip. Front position vernier target sights mount to base attached to top tang, and are housed in early type black leather case embossed in gold “Metford Rifle Sights G. Gibbs, Bristol”, and lined with purple velvet and cloth. This is the most complete set of early sights known, containing vernier staff stamped “George Gibbs Bristol” and “92″ with inset platinum side engraved in degrees of elevation, for sighting radius of 38.7″ which is the correct radius for this rifle, and a 1.2″ diameter eye cup. Also included in case is a screw adjustable front sight with platinum vernier which takes interchangeable front sight apertures. It seems Gibbs numbered these as to type, and a no. 3 post is in place in the sight. Also in the case are 8 additional apertures, numbered between 7 and 14. There is a place in the case for a Halford type front sight which does not appear to have ever been supplied with this rifle. Oak case with reinforcing brass straps at corners, has key lock and strap closure. Straps are held in place by large brass staples. There are remnants of an old paper label on top, inscribed in what appears to be Sanskrit. Unlined interior has many reinforcing blocks with paper “George Gibbs” label on lid. Case contains a number of target “bulls eyes” with groups showing wonderful accuracy of this rifle, and a small leather strap, probably the carrying handle. Weight of rifle: 9 lbs ll oz. Also included are RCBS dies, two Lyman bullet molds, and 49 empty cases formed from Kynoch brass, as well as two small booklets of owners notes on rifle and loads. CONDITION: Excellent, as found. Bbl retains 85 – 90% orig lustrous blue, most loss due to 6″ area in front of forend on lower right side of bbl where some rust has been cleaned, with some light pitting left behind, and blue thinned. Action retains 95% orig case hardening color, most loss being silvering of opening lever, and drag mark from safety. Stocks retain nearly all of their orig finish, with numerous small marks from handling and use over the years. Checkering is excellent with some minor compressions and a few missing diamonds. Buttplate retains 80 – 90% orig case hardening color with some browning and silvering toward heel. Bore is excellent, bright and shiny, nearly perfect. Action is crisp. Safety works. Sight box has small crack on top lid, and a few very small chips in leather. “Bristol” is missing its last two letters. Interior velvet is very fine with some staining from contact with sights. Silk in lid has some marks, mostly from contact with eye cup when attached to staff. Wooden case is good, with area on left bottom about 8″ x 14″ with termite damage, and this area corresponds to area of rusting on bbl. Straps are good. Interior label is missing bits and pieces which looks like silverfish damage, but is mostly readable. Possibly the finest Gibb’s long range rifle in existence. 49224-1 MGM84 (15,000-25,000) – Lot 2241

EXCEPTIONAL PERCUSSION MILITARY STYLE SPORTING RIFLE/ MUSKET BY GEORGE GIBBS, MOST LIKELY HIS MASTERPIECE UPON COMPLETING HIS APPRENTICESHIP.

SN NSN. Cal. .50 (.575 x .583 Smooth oval bore (?)) This unusual, high quality, exceptionally well made, firearm is devoid of any proof marks, numbers, lettering, or inscriptions, except for the name “GEORGE GIBBS” on lockplate. The only conclusion one could make is that it was for show only, for without proofing it was never legally salable or shootable. It remains in exceptional, most likely unfired, condition. Finely browned 33″ ovate skelp twist bbl has integral rounded portion at rear holding unusual flip-over ladder type rear sight (origin of design unknown). Barleycorn front sight is dovetailed through integral square boss at muzzle. Patent breech features plain platinum blow-out and is engraved with well cut open shaded scroll, and unusual device of shield, halberds, and open music book, on top. Breech iron with integral scrolled fence, is also finely scroll engraved. Bar lock with flat faced serpentine chamfered hammer is nearly fully engraved with more of this exquisitely cut shaded scroll. “GEORGE GIBBS” is in scroll terminated riband toward front. Trigger plate has plain rounded finial. Steel trigger guard with more large scroll on bow, is unmarked at tang. Steel buttplate has long scroll engraved top tang. Nicely marbled, and beautifully full length fiddle figured European walnut straight grip stock has nicely cut deep coarse checkering with mullered borders at grip and forend. Stock extends to within 5″ of muzzle, has horn cap and fastens to bbl with two side nails through engraved oval steel escutcheons. Military style steel ramrod is held by two steel pipes with turned ends and matching thimble with small pointed finial. Military style sling loops are mounted through stock in bbl channel and on toe line, which is also fitted with a vacant silver oval. Drop at heel: approx 2-3/16″, drop at comb: approx 1-3/4″. Weight: 9 lbs 0 oz. LOP: 14-3/8″. CONDITION: Excellent, possibly unfired, showing only numerous storage and handling marks, as well as slight ravages of age on its metal and wood finishes. Bbl retains nearly all of its brown, silvered on sharp edges. Case hardening of lock and other furniture has slightly darkened. Bright blue of trigger guard and buttplate has flaked somewhat, and has some freckling. Stock finish is very fine, with aforementioned nicks and dings, but is dry and untouched.
