*AS FOUND, R. G. OWEN CUSTOM SPRINGFIELD ENGRAVED BY KORNBRATH WITH SCOPE.

SN 783. Cal. 30-06. 24″ Slimmed and tapered round bbl is fitted with large rectangular scope mounting block at rear, sleeved-on sling eye, and matted front ramp which holds gold bead front sight with flip-up night bead. Top of bbl is engraved “R. G. OWEN – SAUQUOIT, N.Y. No 783”. There is also a small newly engraved line “R. J. KORNBRATH ENG.” following. (The reason for the addition of this signature is unclear, as engraving on this fine rifle is undoubtedly by Mr. Kornbrath as it incorporates many of his signature motifs, including the exquisitely executed rose blossoms, as well as a sunburst or two.) Springfield action has had tang re-shaped to give more streamlined appearance. Bottom metal has been converted to hinged floorplate type, with release button in trigger guard bow. A set trigger has been installed. Bolt body has been damascened. Knob has a ring of checkering. Flag safety (SAFE silver inlaid) has been checkered and engraved. Belding & Mull one piece scope base has been added. Bottom metal, action, and bbl accents have been beautifully and meticulously engraved with sprays of rose flowers and well cut open shaded scroll highlights. Rose bouquets are on either side of scope mounting block, as well as on pivot of bolt stop, and on trigger guard and floorplate. These bouquets are flanked by geometric embellishments and larger sprays of shaded scroll. Central motif of floorplate is a beautifully detailed relief engraved rendition of a pair of big horn rams in wooded background. A high relief mulie buck is on slimmed trigger guard bow. Steel grip cap with trap is engraved with relief scrolling acanthus and sunburst on trap. Finely marbled and figured European walnut stock measures 13-1/2″ over scroll engraved and checkered steel buttplate with trap. Stock features classic Whelen style beaded and shadow line right hand cheekpiece, point pattern checkering at grip and forend, horn forend tip, and Owen signature arrowhead drop points. A gold shield engraved with monogram “ASB” and a sling eye are on toe line. Weaver K 2.5 scope with El Paso address and crosshair reticle is in Belding & Mull rings. Weight with scope: 8 lbs. 8 oz. LOP: 13-1/2″. CONDITION: Good, as found. Metal parts retain most of what appears to be their orig blue, thinning and silvering overall. Stock retains most of what appears to be its orig oil finish with a number of minor scratches and marks. Checkering re-cut. Bore is excellent with a hint of frosting toward breech end. Trigger will not set. Bbl screw through central diamond of forend is missing. Follower spring is broken. A beautiful rifle in need of a good cleaning and TLC. 49029-11 MGM14 (12,500-22,500) – Lot 2431

*FINE AMERICAN DRILLING WITH CHIP-CARVED STOCK AND INTERESTING FLORAL ENGRAVING UNDOUBTEDLY BY FRED ADOLPH WITH SCOPE.

SN 2004. Cal. 12 x 12 x 6.5×54 Mannlicher. Fred Adolph, best known for his custom Springfield rifles, also sold a large line of custom produced double rifles and combination guns, sourced in Germany, and finished in America. This is undoubtedly one of those guns, as it incorporates many of his signature features. Michael Petrov in CUSTOM GUNMAKERS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY states that most of his pieces were not engraved with his name. That is the case with this interesting drilling which has 30″ Krupp steel bbls fitted with full length matted rib. Claw bases are at rear behind a pop-up U-notch rear sight. Rear sight is actuated by rifle cocking slide on top tang. There are 1″ triangles of scroll and floral engraving at breech ends of bbls. Bbl flats are stamped with pre WWI German proofs. Rifle extractor has spring loaded peg to engage rimless cartridge groove. French greyed, Blitz, scallop-backed action features Krieghoff style rifle/ cocking slide on tang, pin type cocking indicators, Greener type side safety, crossbolt third fastener, side clips, reinforcing bolsters, and gold-plated double triggers (front set). Action is engraved with near full coverage large open scroll with floral terminations with style and quality of execution matching that found on other guns and rifles signed by Adolph. This interesting floral scroll surrounds vignettes of game on sides of action; a pair of squirrels holding nuts are on left, and a pointer points a hiding rabbit on right. This engraving is quite well done and also matches style and quality of most all engraved Adolph guns. Steel trigger guard is engraved with monogram “DK” (?) surrounded by more large flowers. Very fine smoky marbled European walnut sunburst horn capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/4″ over Silver type pad. Side panels and grip are checkered, checkering surrounded by Adolph’s typical floral chip-carving and scrolls. Bore diameter: left -.722, right -.720. Bore restrictions: left -.045 (extra full), right -.045 (extra full). Wall thickness: left -.032, right -.034. Drop at heel: approx 2-7/8″, drop at comb: approx 1-5/8″. Weight without scope: 8 lbs 4 oz. LOP: 14-1/4″. Later claw bases hold Kahlas Helia – Super 2-1/2 power (?) scope with crosshair and post reticle, in Akah claw rings marked “Made in Germany”, rear with windage adjustment. CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refinished. Bbls retain nearly all of a fine lustrous rust blue over some scattered light pits. Action retains traces of orig case hardening color, which was never very dark, and is mostly silver to pewter gray. Stock retains nearly all of a nicely done rubbed oil finish, sharp edges preserved, with some light marks. Pad is relatively new. Checkering lightly worn, does not appear to have been re-cut. Carving is very fine, slightly gummed by oil. Shotgun bores are excellent, with one or two light pings in left bbl. Rifle bore is fine, strong rifling throughout, slightly dark and frosted in grooves. Action is tight. Set trigger works. A dynamic combination gun made by America’s preeminent custom maker from before WWI, who made guns for many celebrities including Teddy Roosevelt, Townsend Whelen, and Charles Newton. 49224-11 MGM70 (5,000-10,000) – Lot 2433

Right side of receiver and top tang has the electric pencil no. “114321142” which appears to be someone’s Social Security Number. All visible parts, including receiver, breechblock, hammer, bbl, trigger guard, buttstock, forearm in several places, bbl bands & nosecap are marked with a small “10”. Rear sight is unmarked, however, there is a small “28” stamped just forward of the rear sight. No disassembly was effected to check for other matching numbers. Accompanied by a copy of the Remington Inventory of Nov 1920 which lists item #66 as “Rem. B. L. rifle, 50 R. F. cal. 39″ bbl” and further shows “Case 21. 12-4”. Remington produced an excess of 1,000,000 of these large frame Rollingblock rifles in a great variety of cal. and bbl lengths for both the US military and numerous foreign governments. They were introduced in 1868 and discontinued in 1888. 2) NSN. Cal. 7 MM Mauser. No.1 RollingBlock rifle with 30″ rnd bbl, tall barleycorn front sight & ski jump rear sight graduated to 2100-yds. Top of bbl is marked “CAL. 7 M. M.”. Top tang is marked in 3-lines with the standard Remington markings. Mounted with uncheckered, straight grain American walnut with full length forearm, 2 bands & slotted head ramrod. Buttstock has straight grip with carbine/musket buttplate. Front band/bayonet lug has a sling loop with corresponding sling loop in buttstock. Bottom of the buttstock, just below the sling base has a rectangular brass tag attached stamped “616”. This is the exact type of brass tag installed by Remington in their reference collection. This is the type of Rollingblock rifle sold to Mexico and a number of other foreign militaries. It is well documented that in the late 1940s, early 1950s Remington deaccessioned quite a number of firearms from their reference collection to renowned dealer/collector Herb Glass. Another interesting thing to note about this pair of guns is that in the inventory listing, #66 is the very first Rolling Block and #616 is the very last Rolling Block listed. CONDITION: 1). Very fine, all matching. Bbl retains about 95% glossy orig blue with light, fine surface rust. Receiver retains most of its orig case colors, moderately to heavily faded. Breechblock, hammer & trigger guard have mostly faded to silver. Buttplate retains about 80% dull blue. Wood is sound with a series of dings on left side of buttstock with other light handling and storage marks and retains about 85-90% orig oil finish. Mechanics are crisp. Bright shiny bore. 2) Extremely fine plus. Overall retains 99% plus crisp orig factory finish with bright blues and brilliant case colors. Stock has a couple of small gouges, otherwise wood is sound with a very few, very small mars to the surface and overall retains virtually all of its crisp orig oil finish. Mechanics are crisp. Brilliant shiny bore, appears to be new and unfired indicative of a Remington reference collection gun. 49568-1 JR (9,000-14,000) – Lot 3273
