BRAUNSCHWEIG ATTRIBUTED WHEEL LOCK BALL BUTT (PUFFER) BELT PISTOL, CIRCA 1590.

NSN. Cal. 13.5mm. Classic German Wheel Lock with plain lockplate. Rnd 12-5/8″ swamped bbl, 21″ overall. Bbl is decorated with simulated fish scales. Ebonized wood stock is plain with inlaid decorated bone rear of breech. Attribution to Braunschweig is based on lock design of known Brunswick (Braunschweig) attributed arms. Only marking seen externally is a small 2-headed eagle just forward of fish scale on top of bbl. PROVENANCE: Private Lifetime Collection Of A Noted Scholar And Authority. CONDITION: Very good overall with wood restoration to forestock on left side forward of tip of 5-1/4″ belt hook. Metal is overall cleaned and grey/bright with staining and pinprick pitting. FINE 17TH CENTURY AUGSBURG WHEEL LOCK PISTOL, CIRCA 1605, FOR TROOPS OF DIETER VON REITENAU, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG.

NSN. Cal. 9.6mm. This distinctive pistol was made to arm the personal guard of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dieter von Reitenau, measures 29″ overall with half octagon-round 20-1/2″ bbl (52cm). Fixed dovetail rear sight, slightly turned down muzzle with two incised rings. Rear of bbl has Augsburg proof and a makers mark of a standing bird similar to Stockel figure 8492, pg 1482. Lock and bbl show no other markings. Stock is decorated extensively with bone inlays of masks, birds, floral and geometric scrimshaw with delicate connecting tendrils. Bone inlays and mounts cover much of surface from butt to nosecap. PROVENANCE: Private Lifetime Collection Of A Noted Scholar And Authority. CONDITION: Good-very good overall. Several crack repairs to stock. Some small pieces of bone inlay are missing, especially in the delicate tendrils. Bone buttplate cap has about a 2″ restoration at top. GIFFARD TYPE AIR RIFLE BY ST. ETIENNE ARMS & CYCLE WORKS.

SN 5340. Cal. 8mm round ball. 25″ Round bbl with French Arms and Cycle Works marking along with “ST. ETIENNE” in gold on top. Rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. Blued and engraved action has rotating bolt to chamber ball, and an 11″ air cylinder mounts under bbl. Plain walnut stock is checkered at grip. Buttplate is embossed with a hot air balloon, and “Paul Giffard Inventeur”. CONDITION: Excellent. Rifle itself retains nearly all its orig blue, and stock finish. Air cylinder silvered on high points, and with wrench marks at rear. 51701-5 MGM62 (1,300-1,750) – Lot 2232
