RARE J. HENRY NAVY BOARDING PISTOL, CIRCA 1814.

NSN. Cal. 54. This very rare gun of which only 2 are thought to be known is described by Sam Smith & E. W. Bitter in Historic Pistols The American Marital Flintlock, 1760-1845 on pg 188 “During the Revolutionary War, the American Navy dwindled from thirteen warships in 1776 to none in 1780. Although the official Navy was next to nothing, the privateer navy was a great power. After the French and the British had begun to stop and search American ships on the high seas and to impress seamen, there was a great demand for arms. Privateers and ship’s chandleries placed orders for pistols with the well-known gunsmiths of the day, such as Henry, Waters, North, French, and Miles, up and down the eastern coast and near the principal ports of Providence, Boston, New London, New York Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore”. 9-3/4″ iron bbl marked with a “P” in a sunken oval at left breech as normally seen on contract arms of the 1808-1812 period. Lock is marked “J.HENRY” in one line under the integral iron pan and there is a “G” inside the lock plate with a “P” on the bridle. Balance of lock inside has not been cleaned showing its age and dirt so other markings are not visible. The bbl and lock are orig flint. The 6″ long belt hook appears to be orig and fits well. The brass buttcap, trigger guard, rammer pipe and side plate fit well to the unmarked walnut stock. PROVENANCE: Ex-Nick Penachio, Sr. Collection; Pictured on pg 344 of “Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms”, 2007. CONDITION: Very good overall, brass mounts, iron and stock have all been cleaned which was typical among early collectors and varnished overall. The ramrod fits nicely, but is not orig. The stock fits to the metal well with only a 3/8 x 3/16″ chip at the rear bbl pin in front of the lock screw on off lock side and some very minor chipping at the front bbl pin. Hammer screw is a fine replacement. This is a very nice condition and very rare Naval Boarding pistol from the period of the War of 1812. 51654-1 JS (4,500-6,500) – Lot 1279

RARE 1817 DATED HARPER’S FERRY MODEL 1795 FLINTLOCK MUSKET WITH ORIGINAL BAYONET.

NSN. Cal. 69. This is a rarely encountered “as found” early American, apparently all original 1817 dated Model 1795 Harper’s Ferry musket. Gun is in the standard configuration seen on the 1815-1819 production with 42″ bbl, 3-1/8″ bbl extension, bayonet lug on top of bbl. The accompanying bayonet fits well, and is US surcharged with and inspected. Lockplate is marked forward of cock with eagle over US and rear of cock “Harper’s / Ferry / 1817”. The bbl has two inspector’s cartouches, both recessed ovals, one with raised “US” the other with a “Liberty Cap over P”. Opposite the lock are Harper’s Ferry inspector’s cartouches “V/IP” for Joseph Perkins. There are indiscernible stock inspectors marks in wood rear of trigger guard. Harper’s Ferry produced just under 93,000 Model 1795 between 1801-1818, 8,516 being made in 1817. Many of these guns saw hard use and most were converted to percussion. Orig flint examples are quite rare and this appears to be an honest example. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Metal is overall brown and pitted except where protected under bands where some orig surface can be seen. Markings in metal are very good and discernible as is inspector’s cartouche in stock. There are several cracks around and opposite lock though stock is overall sound with numerous scattered blemishes expected from after 200 years. Wood overall has a hand worn patina. Mechanically, gun is sound with pitted bore; bayonet matches gun well for fit and patina. The ramrod has matching patina with no threading and protrudes a couple of inches past muzzle, though no doubt ramrod channel could be cleaned and better fit. 51388-1 JS (4,000-6,000) – Lot 1283

CONDITION: Very good overall. Metal was cleaned and is white/gray overall with well discerned markings as can be seen in photos. Walnut stock is refinished with two glued crack repairs showing typical nicks, dings, and scratches and good discernible inspector marks as can be seen in photos. Mechanically gun functions well including safety with a smooth clean bore. 51127-6 JS (1,500-2,500) – Lot 3560

EXTREMELY RARE SOUTH CAROLINA SURCHARGED FLINTLOCK MUSKET.

SN 107. Cal. 69. This Model 1798 Whitney Contract musket is in standard configuration with 42″ bbl and South Carolina surcharged examples are not found in the literature including American Military Shoulder Arms, George Moller. Model 1816 muskets were purchased from Whitney in 1834, but not in this 1798 type III configuration that would pre-date the War of 1812. This gun is “as found”, complete, though missing ramrod and front band appears to be a contemporary replacement. Lock is marked like other Model 1798’s with eagle over “NEW HAVEN” forward of lock and “U.S STATES” in arc rear of hammer. No US proofs or inspector marks, “So CAROLINA.” is stamped on lock escutcheon and “28TH / REGT” in large oval cartouche rear of lock escutcheon in stock. Rack number “107” is painted on top of stock, rear of breech and stamped on rear of bbl. CONDITION: Good to very good “as found”. Metal is grey/brown with staining, scattered pitting under old varnish that covers entire gun, including stock. Gun appears orig and complete with exception of later fabricated front band with same varnish. Stock was whittled under front band for fit. There is a 1/2″ chip of wood missing rear of lock and old pinned wood repair between tang and lock; comb has been shaved on the left side. Accompanying ramrod is a new addition. Functionally fine with smooth bore with pitting. 51357-4 JS (2,000-4,000) – Lot 3565

1818 DATED SPRINGFIELD FLINTLOCK MUSKET.

NSN. Cal. 69. This gun has matching lock and bbl dates of “1818”. Lock markings are well struck and easily discerned. This is a scarce model in orig flint, unfortunately this is a re-conversion from percussion utilizing a mix of orig and reproduction parts but still presents nicely. CONDITION: Good to very good as reconverted and restored. The weld to bbl at breech removing percussion cone is obvious as are added lock parts with different surfaces in the re-conversion. Sling swivels are also restored. Iron overall has been cleaned with an overall mottled silver/grey color with pitting at breech. Stock has been sanded with rnd edges with no discernible inspector’s marks opposite lock. The added frizzen spring is broken and has no tension. Please Note: Additional research (see Provenance online) indicates that the patchbox is almost an identical match to that used by the Gumph family. It is attributed to either Christian or his father Stoephel, and was probably made Pre 1800.
