*INCREDIBLE RELIEF GOLD INLAID RUGER NO. 1 CUSTOM ENGRAVED AND STOCKED SINGLE SHOT RIFLE.

SN 118. Cal. 7mm Remington Mag. Spectacular custom rifle inspired by the 1985 produced Ruger No. 1 rifle engraved with gold inlaid sheep motif that was auctioned to benefit the Arms and Armour Gallery of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That rifle was the first of a series of 21 North American big game rifles that was to be produced. This rifle has a 22″ tapered rnd bbl, gold bead ramp mounted front sight and quarter rib with single folding leaf. Mounted with incredible Circassian walnut with spectacular checkered, ebony tipped, Ruger-style forearm and pistol grip stock with fluted side panels and cheekpiece 13-1/2″ over a skeleton buttplate. Bbl is mounted with a stalking swivel ring with corresponding base in the buttstock. Receiver is incredibly engraved, probably by renowned engraver Franz Marktl who engraved the rifle mentioned above. Engraving consists of the large vignette of three Dall Sheep on the left side, two standing and one recumbent, executed in full relief gold in spectacular detail, set in a mountain scene. Right side has the large vignette of two North American Big Horn Sheep, one standing and one recumbent, also executed in full relief in equal detail, also in a mountain scene. Remainder of the receiver is engraved in outstanding, intertwined foliate arabesque patterns with a French grey finish. Both vignettes and top & bottom of receiver are outlined in flush gold wire inlay. Matching engraving patterns and gold wire inlay extend up the bbl over the chamber area, on both sides of the quick detachable scope rings which contain a Leupold Vari-X-III 1.5-5X Scope. Sides of the quarter rib are engraved in a very fine diamond and dot pattern with interspersed foliate arabesque patterns which are also on the top front edges. Front edge of the rib also has gold wire inlay with matching engraving and gold wire patterns on rear face of front sight ramp. The stalking swivel ring is inlaid in gold wire. Lever is engraved to match also with gold wire inlay, as is the buttplate heel and toe. The French grey steel grip cap is beautifully engraved with the full relief bust of a Dall Sheep also executed in fantastic detail. The custom forearm has a 3/4″ x 1/2″ oval inlay, beautifully engraved in a flower or sunburst pattern with gold wire border. This small inlay conceals the forearm attaching screw. Drop at the heel: approx 2-1/2″; drop at the comb: approx 1-7/8″; weight without scope: 7lbs 0oz. This is one of the most incredible pieces of gun art ever examined by this cataloger. CONDITION: Extremely fine+. Appears to be unfired since finishing. Overall retains virtually all of its beautiful custom finish to both metal and wood. Optics are crisp. Mechanics are fine. Brilliant, shiny bore. Appears to be new and unfired. 51758-1 JRL (12,500-22,500) – Lot 1404

Metal parts retain most of a very light refinish with correct rust blue, which is over a few scattered light pits, engraving remains sharp and clear. Bolt damascening remains strong, with portions of bolt shroud and safety, as well as bolt handle somewhat browned. Wood retains nearly all of an old oil refinish over a few minor marks. Carving is very slightly softened. Checkering lightly worn, and has not been re-cut. Pad is a relatively new replacement. A receiver sight has been removed from right side of bridge, mounting holes are welded and small piece of wood installed. Restoration is difficult to see. Bore is excellent, bright, sharp and shiny throughout. Action is smooth. An ultimate classic Hoffman rifle; this rifle is pictured in ORIGINAL OBERNDORF SPORTING RIFLES by John Speed et al, as figure 963 on p. 425, and described and pictured again as figure 566, 567, and 569 on p. 253. 51423-1 (18,000-24,000) C&R; ESA – Lot 1408

*EXTREMELY RARE SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 22 HORNET CONVERSION OF A SPRINGFIELD M1922 TRAINING RIFLE.

SN 20342. Cal 22 Hornet. Externally appears to be a standard M1922 M1 bolt action rifle with 24″ tapered rnd bbl, Lyman 17A globe front sight and Lyman 48 receiver sight with large disc aperture. Top of bbl at the front sight is marked “SA / 11-31” with the Springfield flaming bomb in the center. Left side of bbl over the chamber area is marked “LONG RIFLE CART’GE ONLY”. Top of the bbl & receiver ring are mounted with Winchester target scope blocks. Receiver has the standard M1922 M1 markings. Mounted in what is probably its original walnut sporting half stock with single grooved band and sling loops. Buttplate is checkered steel semi-crescent early M1922 type Trigger has standard grooved face with checkered tip and the bolt a headless striker. The forestock and pistol grip are checkered in a style identical to other Springfield Armory checkered sporting rifles. The 22 Hornet cartridge was developed by 4 men at the Springfield Armory in cooperation with the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Those men were all extremely famous shooters in their day, Capt. G.A. Woody, A.L. Woodworth, Capt. Grove Watkyns and Col. Townsend Whelen. Pages 145-147 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy details the history of the development of these rifles and pictures the alterations that were made to convert them. The subject rifle exhibits all of the identical alterations including the center fire bolt, magazine box & follower and the fitted piece in the bottom of the receiver under the stock to alter the opening for the magazine box. The extractor has also been altered and extended to accommodate the larger rim of this cartridge. Each of the 4 men involved in the development of this cartridge, utilizing the Springfield Armory facilities apparently made a rifle for themselves. This does not appear to be one of those four rifles, although there is little doubt that it was created at the Springfield Armory. Upon learning of the merits and success of the Springfield Armory 22 Hornet, Griffin & Howe and Sedgley began producing their own versions but utilized full size 1903 actions. Accompanied by a Springfield Service Research letter which identifies this rifle as having been sold & shipped from Springfield Armory to Griffin & Howe on March 9, 1934. It is listed as a Model 1922 M1 in caliber 22 and was “a special sale from Springfield Armory to Griffin & Howe”. Apparently Griffin & Howe used this rifle as a model for their later production. This rifle appears to be original in every respect. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. The metal overall retains virtually all of a fine custom finish, probably from Springfield Armory. The wood also retains most of its orig finish, turned a little dark on the buttstock. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 51693-13 JRL (3,500-5,000) C&R – Lot 1409
