RARE AND IMPORTANT INLAID FEDERAL CARD TABLE SIGNED I+S (JACOB SANDERSON, SALEM, MASS.). Square tapered legs with inlaid ankle band. Top with elliptical front and half serpentine ends. Mahogany with figured birch used in center oval and panels at top of legs. Curly-grained satinwood veneers used in skirt. Oval central panel is surrounded by rosewood veneers. Top has rosewood band and line inlay. Rosewood band at bottom of skirt. Underneath top has painted in black paint “I+S”. Appears to have old chalk? Jww. REFERENCE No.1: Page 330, No. 300 in “American Furniture The Federal Period by Charles F. Montgomery”. In his description of this table, he mentions and attributed this signature to Jacob Sanderson. The table pictured may well be this table. REFERENCE No.2: Page 294, “American Cabinet Makers by William C. Ketchum, Jr.”. Mentions a card table with this signature under Jacob Sanderson. ANTONIO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAMSHIP CZARITZA. Large oil on board of the twin stack steamer Czaritza of the Russian/American ship line. This wide painting is taken up almost entirely by the ship (50”). Ship sails right to left and has a black hull and white upper decks. Two masts, one having American flag and the other having the Russian flag. Also, a large Russian flag flies astern and at smaller one at the bow. There are nine lifeboats and thirty-seven people shown on decks. Smoke comes from two white stacks and ship cuts through a wavy blue and green sea. Blue sky with puffy white clouds with darker clouds off the stern. Signed lower right “Antonio Jacobsen 1915”. Housed in a gold gesso decorated frame, which has damage. SIZE: 29-1/2” x 59-3/4”. VICTOR CLYDE FORSYTHE (American, 1885-1962) ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR WWII POSTER. Lot of three works including the original pencil sketch, colored oil painting and photographic print. Forsythe was an illustrator and cartoonist who was a staff artist for the New York World covering news events with his drawings. His best known poster is “And They Thought We Couldn’t Fight”. He later moved to California and shared a studio with Frank Tenney Johnson and produced western paintings. 1) Oil on paper of the finished poster in triptych form. Central panel shows central figure of a soldier amongst the horrors of war. Depicted in this panel are the Japanese and German forces against the allied forces. Fighting is in the air and on the ground. Left smaller panel shows a European home with family and man tilling the soil with horse in a tranquil pre-war setting. Corresponding right panel depicts the ruined home, dead horse and grave markers in distance. One assumes the family in portrayed in the left part of the central panel dead or dying is asking for help. Signed “C.F.” in right corner. Well framed in a thin wood frame with cutout and highlighted matte. IMAGE SIZE: 12-1/2” x 28”. OUTSTANDING CARVED FALL FRONT DESK/CABINET ON STAND. Oak top section has three drawers over a drop front door. The drawers are faced with carved heads. The left and right drawers, when taken out, hide a side long secret drawer. There are also two secret drawers in between the three drawers. Front door has decorative ironwork and central panel with Shakespeare and seated figures. Interior has ten drawers with central door, each drawer with deep carved scene with men. Central door, which is locked, has carved seated figure. Front lid is flanked by two full carved figures. Side panels have relief carved figures. Side panel has signature Magarinos Santiago. Piece appears to have been made in the first quarter of the 20th Century. Open trestle type base appears to be a later addition.
