WINCHESTER 1ST MODEL 1876 OCTAGON BARREL FULL MAGAZINE RIFLE WITH OPEN TOP RECEIVER.

SN 962. Cal. 45-60. 28″ oct bbl with full magazine. Blue finish with straight grained American walnut stocks with crescent butt. Bbl has standard bbl address for this model. Nickel silver Rocky Mountain blade front sight ladder type rear site, with “1876” stamped at the top. Receiver is of the early and scarce open top variety with no provision for a dust cover. Upper tang is marked Model 1876, lower tang has SN engraved behind lever, and assembly no. 861 stamped on inside of lower tang. Assembly no. is also stamped on the inside of the upper tang mortise of the stock and on the inside toe of the buttplate. Stock is otherwise unmarked. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl and magazine show a mottled oil stained finish overall with clear markings. Sights are very good. Bore is dark with traces of rifling. Receiver is also a mottled brown patina overall with dried oil stains. Elevator is an even mustard patina with very few small dents. Hammer and lever are a pleasing plum patina with traces of casecolor on the sides of the hammer. SN on lower tang is sharp. Tang screw is a replacement. Stocks are very good, slightly undersized with some small dents and handling marks overall. Buttplate is a silver gray patina with some oil stains. Forend has dark carry wear at the rear. Forend cap is a silver gray patina. A very good example of a rare “Open Top” Model 1876 Winchester with a 3-digit SN. 49973-8 TEP (5,500-7,500) – Lot 1054
