EASTMAN JOHNSON (American, 1824-1906) “GIRL AND PET DOLL”.

Oil on board Housed in a fine giltwood frame Signed lower right “E.J.”, inscribed on verso “child and doll” along with illegible pencil signature NOTE: This lot is accompanied by a photocopy of a letter dated November 17th, 1988 from Patricia Hills regarding the inclusion of the work in her forthcoming Eastman Johnson catalog raisonne. In the letter, Ms. Hills mentions this painting is included in a photograph of an interior of Johnson’s studio, reproduced in her Eastman Johnson book on page 123. The same photo was originally reproduced in Edgar French’s “An American Portrait Painter of Three Historical Epochs,” Published in 1906, pg 8317. The painting was included in the estate sale of the artist’s pictures held at the American Art Galleries in New York in 1907, entry number 41 SIZE: 22″ x 10-1/2″.
