RARE EARLY COLT MODEL 1860 FLUTED ARMY PERCUSSION REVOLVER & HOLSTER WITH HISTORY STATING IT IS A RELIC FROM THE FETTERMAN MASSACRE.

SN 227. Cal. 44. This rare early fluted Colt Army, SN 227, is honest, complete, all-original and matching. It is mentioned in an article telling of the collection of “Happy Jack” Allen, US Marshall from Wyoming. Allen died in 1942 and his collection was chronicled in a 3-part article we believe published in the Cheyenne Chronicle 1933. This gun is listed by SN in article “…one of the rarest guns probably in existence, one of the earliest Colts [sic] pistols manufactured. Stamped in the metal is its number, no 227…and is still in its original sheath. This weapon came from the historic Fetterman Massacre near Sheridan.” About a dozen pages of information is included in this lot concerning this US Marshall and his collection. On these same floors in March 2004, lot 1372, included an archive of “Happy Jack” Allen’s single action Army and other arms and equipment mentioned in these same articles. Regardless of provenance, this is a very good example of a rare Colt revolver that shows honest use and no doubt a gun that could have been at the Fetterman Massacre. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Overall good to very good. All matching SNs. Markings all discernible. Metal overall is gray/plum. Bbl shows holster wear at muzzle. String traces of original silver plate are present on trigger guard and stocks, which are well-fit, retain about 30% of their original factory varnish with exception of wedge screw. Gun appears 100% original. Accompanying holster is sound and supple with crazing and cracking.
