BOLOGNESE SCHOOL (17th Century) MERCURY, ARGUS AND IO.

Oil on canvas/hemp Housed in a contemporary giltwood frame Unsigned Note: The story of Mercury and Argus is found in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and is part of the longer tale of Jupiter and Io, the beautiful young woman whom Jupiter seduced and then transformed into a white heifer in order to hide her from his jealous wife, Juno. When Juno discovered the deception, he sent Argus, her hundred-eyed watchman, to guard Io and prevent her from returning to her family. Jupiter then dispatched Mercury to kill Argus in order to free Io SIZE: 54″ x 46″. Overall: 55″ x 63″ CONDITION: As expected for age.
