ERNEST LONGFELLOW (American, 1845-1921) “HAYSTACKS, NEWBURYPORT, MASS”.

Oil on canvas Housed in a carved and molded giltwood frame Signed lower right “Ernest Longfellow” and inscribed on verso frame “Ernest Longfellow/Haystacks, Newburyport, MA”, also inscribed on verso stretcher “Property of H.N.L.” Note: Ernest Longfellow was a Massachusetts landscape painter and the son of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He and his wife Hattie (Spellman) Longfellow later had homes in Manchester-by-the-Sea and Cambridge, Massachusetts. His family home, now Longfellow National Historic Site, is under the management of the National Park Service (2003) and has extensive Longfellow family papers and the largest repository of Ernest W. Longfellow’s art with hundreds of his drawings and paintings from childhood through adult works of art. Longfellow studied in Paris with Leon Bonnat and Thomas Couture and in the United States had exhibition venues that included the Boston Art Club, Brooklyn Art Association, National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy.
