ARMAND GUILLAUMIN II (French, 1891-1955) RUINS CROZANT, PROVENCE, FRANCE.

Oil on Masonite, c. 1952 Housed in a carved and painted wood frame Signed lower right “Guillaumin fils”, dated 1952 with indiscernable inscription on verso Note: Guillaumin II, was the son of the better-known Impressionist painter, Jean-Baptiste Armand Guillaumin (1841-1927). Jean-Baptiste was a founding member of the independent French painters who organized the first Impressionist exhibit in 1874. First exhibiting in the Salon des Refuses in 1863 with Pissaro and Cezanne, the elder Guillaumin was a friend and colleague of Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Morisot, and the longest living Impressionist. In 1886, Jean-Baptiste married his cousin Marie-Josephine and in 1891, The painter of this picture, Armand, was born when his father was 50 years old. Guillaumin II, was raised amongst his father’s art, however, interestingly, very few of his father’s paintings include his son. One pastel of Mrs. Guillaumin holding her son is listed in the catalogue raisonne. The young artist inherited his father’s talent for painting and took inspiration for this painting from a similar painting his father created from their home village of Crozant, in Provence, France SIZE: 18″ x 21-1/2″.
