*VERY FINE PURDEY EXTRA FINISH GAME/SKEET GUN WITH EXTRA BARRELS AND CASE.

SN 27589. Cal. 12 GA 2-3/4″ Chambers. (Made in 1968) 26″ (gold inlaid S at rear) and 28″ Chopper lump bbls, both sets with raised, matted, ventilated ribs, are engraved with Purdey name and Audley House address on tops. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers. SNs are stamped on the bottoms of both bbl sets, along with bbl makers initials “BF” (Brian Frost). Tube nos. 70623 and 70624 are on 28″ bbls, which also have choke markings of 60% and 70% engraved on rear lump. Tube nos. 70625 and 70626 are on 26″ bbls with 40% and 50% engraved on rear lump. Coin finished Beesley patent, self-opening action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), gold-plated internals and trigger, hidden third fastener, side clips, bushed strikers, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, and Purdey non-selective sgl trigger. Action is also fitted with hand detachable locks, using Purdey’s system of toggles similar to the Holland system, but with one for each individual lock with half threads requiring only a quarter turn to remove pin. Action is engraved with very attractive, large, open, scrolling acanthus with strap work highlights in a Purdey “extra finish” pattern, first done in the 1930’s by Harry Kell. This engraving is very well cut, and nicely shaded, possibly the work of Ken Hunt, but no signature found. Scroll on fences is in somewhat deeper relief. “J. Purdey & Sons” is on each lockplate, and on bottom of action, along with “LONDON ENGLAND”. Matching small bow trigger guard has SN engraved on tang. Lightly marbled and nicely figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/4″ over engraved steel buttplate, matching remainder of gun. Stock also features classic drop points and checkering, along with individual gold initials “CB” inlet on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release, serves both bbl sets, and has SN engraved on iron, which is also stamped with actioners initials “B.D” (Ben Delay, most likely Jr.). 26″ BBL SET: Bore diameter: left -.729, right -.729. Bore restrictions: left -.005 (IC), right -.002 (IC). Wall thickness: left -.032, right -.034. Drop at heel: 2-3/8″, drop at comb: 1-9/16″. Weight: 7 lbs 4 oz. LOP: 14-1/4″. 28″ BBL SET: Bore diameter: left -.729, right -.734. Bore restrictions: left -.028 (Imod), right -.008 (IC). Wall thickness: left -.032, right -.029. Drop at heel: 2-5/16″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 7 lbs 4 oz. LOP: 14-1/4″. Orig makers oak and leather case with brass corners and central round medallion is embossed “Conley Brooks” (matching initials on toe line) and “Minneapolis, Minn” on top. Interior with space for both bbls, is lined in burgundy cloth, and has gold embossed black leather Purdey label in lid, and a charge card for this gun and both bbls. Case contains 2-pc beech and brass cleaning rod with mop, jag, and chamber brush in covered compartment, Purdey marked square oil bottle and snap caps. Other accessories include plated striker bottle with spare strikers, broken case extractor, striker key and two turnscrews with ebonized handles, and key. CONDITION: Excellent, showing limited use. 26″ bbls are lightly silvered on sharp edges, with some light marks. 28″ Bbls have some light spotting. Coin finish of action is excellent, some darkening due to accumulation of oil. Stocks have a number of light marks and scratches in their orig “slacum” finish, which is presently quite dry. Some scratches are somewhat deeper on right side toward butt, checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent. 28″ bbls have a hint of looseness and are slightly off face. 26″ bbls are tighter, but still very slight light visible at face of right bbl, otherwise mechanically excellent. Drop is excellent with both sets of bbls. Case leather is very fine to excellent with some light marks and slight corrosion on brass. Interior cloth is excellent with marks and compressions from action and bbls. Accessories are good, somewhat corroded. 49305-18 MGM273 (35,000-55,000) – Lot 2264
