“RALLY FREEMEN!” CIVIL WAR RECRUITING POSTER 187TH PA INF.This rare poster recruiting troops early in 1864 by Capt. Charles A. Thomas a veteran of several other PA regiments rising from the ranks of Private to Captain would lead his troops from Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, PA to join General Joshua Chamberlain commanding the first division of the 5th army corps. The newly formed 187th would “see the elephant” early and often as it joined the army June 6th in the front at Petersburg. On June 17th alone General Chamberlain would cite this unit for gallantry as Major George W. Merrick who lost his leg and the unit lost over 10% of their men killed or wounded on this single day of fighting. The unit would remain engaged in the trenches and on the fortifications at Petersburg until August 18th when unit moved down the Weldon Railroad and saw more heavy fighting at Six Mile House. The unit was ordered back north September 22nd for garrison and escort duty in Philadelphia as it had seen enough action in their first few months in the war. During the funeral obsequies of President Lincoln it led the procession from the railway station to Independence Hall and guarded the remains while they lay in state. Together with the 1st City Troop they were detailed to escort the remains back to the railroad. This is a wonderful poster typical of late war posters advertising large cash payments for new recruits who could receive a bounty often as large as a year or more wages for a common laborer. SIZE: 31″ x 24-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fair to good as laid and mounted on linen.
