JAPANESE OFFICER’S SWORD GIVEN BY JAPANESE ADMIRAL SUGIYAMA TO REAR ADMIRAL MORTON L. DEYO, USN.

Accompanying Japanese army officer mounted Katana (Samurai sword) along with vintage photograph of Admiral Deyo with Vice Admiral Sugiyama sitting at table with other officers during the formal surrender of the Sasebo Naval Station while aboard the USS Santa Fe. There are several accompanying letters from Japanese sword experts translating the signature on tang “Province-Owari; Maker-MASATAKA”. There is no other provenance other than family history that the sword was obtained by Admiral Deyo at the Sasebo Surrender, September 21, 1945. PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Blade still exhibits most of its visible temper with old polishing and one small nick in cutting edge.
