RARE & DESIRABLE PLAINS INDIAN MASSIVE PIPE TOMAHAWK WITH DOUBLE CUTOUT HEAD.19-1/4″ haft with pewter inset, forged head is 10-3/4″ with a 4-1/4″ cutting edge. Weighs fully 2 lbs. Quite a formidable axe in relatively fine condition from the well-known Francis Collection. The double bat wing & heart decoration is highly desirable and often forged. The pipe bowl still shows rifling where it was made from a rifle barrel. SIZE: As noted above. PROVENANCE: The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art, pg. 111, fig. 177; Sotheby’s, lot 93, May 23, 1993; An extraordinary private estate collection of a distinguished Virginia gentleman. CONDITION: Very good overall. Iron has areas of original polish but overall iron is well patinad with staining and pitting.
