EXCEPTIONAL GRAIN PAINTED SLANT LID PINE DESK SIGNED GEORGE PIERCE, MANLIUS, NEW YORK.

First quarter 19th century New England. The rectangular dovetailed case with hinged, sloping lid resting on lopers. The interior fitted with an arrangement of five document drawers. The case with four graduated long drawers with thumb molded edges and with original stamped brass floral handles raised on simple bracket feet centering a scalloped apron. The desk retains original free form sponge decoration with diagonal squiggle line borders. Tea brown decorations on a bold bittersweet orange ground. SIZE: 48″ h x 36″ w (case) x 20-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Northeast Auctions August 2008, lot 894, Madeleine Killeen and David Zabriskie, New York,Contents of a lifetime collection “Brook Crossing,” South Pomfret, VT. CONDITION: Original decorated and painted surfaces untouched with normal and expected in-use wear. Hardware original, backboards and feet original. Backboards retain hand-painted inscription in black paint; most likely the name and location of original owner or perhaps the maker. Backboards retain original hand-cut nails.
