SPECTACULAR FOLK ART AUTOMATED DISPLAY. Circa early 20th Century, this exceptional and unique automated diorama of a busy mountain scene boasts a cast of scores of citizens in a variety of activities. This papier mache and wood display also utilizes old cigar boxes and other found materials and depicts mountain climbers, farmers, mill workers, lovers having a romantic interlude, a political candidate’s speech with a lively crowd of onlookers, churchgoers, and more. A single crank in the back sets into motion a series of actions including a moving train in the distance, water wheels, and animating a selection of characters. Because an American flag is seen among the German and other flags, the piece is believed to be American made perhaps by a German or European immigrant because of the Alpine theme and use of American materials. Housed in an old glass and wood showcase that though not original, serves as a great means of display and protection from dust. SIZE: 33″ l x 22″ h x 13″ d. CONDITION: Overall very good. It is unknown if it is complete. It is possible there have been some minor repairs over the years. 1-11234 (1,500-2,000)
