IVES CLOCKWORK BLACK NURSEMAID WITH CHILD. A classic toy from the late 19th century with a clockwork mechanism featuring a black Mammy with glass eyes attending to calming the young child. When mechanism is activated, the nursemaid rocks back and forth while gently lifting the child and putting her to sleep. Nursemaid contained within a walnut box, she retains her original cotton polka dot dress and young doll in her cotton christening outfit. Toy has been packed away for countless years and contained within a wooden box, quite possibly the same vintage as the toy itself. SIZE: Approx. 9″ t. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus, light soiling to clothing. Mechanism functional, but wire/string to nursemaid is disconnected. 1-11515 (5,500-7,500)
