BLACK BUST OF MALE YOUTH WITH CLOCKWORK EYES. During the first half of the 20th century the use of children for advertising commercial products was the norm. From using the Gold Dust Twins for selling the soap powder to the Dionne Quintuplets virtually selling every baby product imaginable. This particular clockwork piece evidently was manufactured in Chicago and copyrighted with an “1897” date. It features a young black boy, maybe 8-10 years of age, with parted lips and showing his teeth and tongue. Completely made of plaster papier mache he has extremely well molded lifelike hair and a molded cream colored shirt. When the mechanism is wound his eyes dart about the room from left to right. He has a most appealing and endearing look about him. On the rear of the head are the original directions for usage, the copyright date, the artist or perhaps the manufacturer. SIZE: 13-1/2″ h. CONDITION: Overall older restoration repaint, but quite acceptable. One eye needs slight adjustment. 1-11324 (1,000-1,500)
