FRENCH ACROBAT AUTOMATON. Circa 20th Century. Attributed to French maker Michel Marcu. This charming windup musical automaton features a clown acrobat with composition head with colorful makeup, blond mohair wig, and blue glass eyes. He wears a motley outfit of blue and gold silk with a vest with velvet paisleys and a matching cap. He rests on his hands atop the central ladder. Upon activation, he slowly rises up to a hand stand and back down again. He then rises again. This time, to the amazement of onlookers, he rises up on one hand before starting the act again. A splendid piece of craftsmanship and is mounted to a gold velvet covered stepped base and retains its original key marked “M” on one side and the number “2833” on the other. SIZE: 13-1/2″ l x 10″ w x 25″ h. CONDITION: Generally very good and working. Some lifting to trim and silk sleeves show distress. 1-11499 (3,000-5,000)
