WONDERFUL WATERCOLOR SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER “CARIAD” OF CARNARVON BY LUIGI P. RENAULT (1845-1910). Watercolor shows a two-mast schooner in full sail going from left to right. Black hull with name on bow. Four crewmembers on deck, ship flies Canadian flag off stern and other flags fly off masts. In background is steamer and what appears to be a whale tail. Signed lower left “Renault Leghorn”. Watercolor is mounted on paper with thin gold border. Below watercolor states “Schooner “Cariad” of Carnarvon. E. L. Jones Master 1896″. Housed in a carved oak frame with gold liner and gray matte. Renault was an Italian ship portraitist working at Leghorn in the third quarter of the 19th Century. Several museums have examples including five at the Peabody Museum of Salem. SIZE: Inside matte 15″ h x 19″ w. CONDITION: There are two vertical acid burns in center, also some minor foxing.
