OUTSTANDING EARLY WATERCOLOR OF SHIPS AT ANCHOR BY LUDOLF BACKHUYSEN (1631-1709). Watercolor is monogrammed with initals in right corner, left corner has what might be a location. Scene shows two principal boats side by side with several other boats in background. Calm sea with white clouds and blue sky. We believe this to be a study for a major oil painting. It has penciled grid lines approximately 1″ both horizontally and vertically. The flag flying off the main ship indicates Rotterdam port. Remarkable detail by a renownded artist who is best known for his ships on violent seas. SIGHT SIZE: 8 1/2″ h x 13 1/4″ w. CONDITION: Left hand side has water spot damage, also one spot in ocean. 9-91931 (10,000-20,000)
