HORSE DRAWN “IXL” EXPRESS CO. WAGON BY FALLOWS. An unusual wagon with an even more unusual driver. Handsomely painted in dark blue with large gold stenciling upon the side. The driver, very unusual and a seldom seen figure, is fitted to the seat by means of two tabs that when inserted are bent over to keep him in position. These pins are similar in nature to scrapbooking brads found in stationery stores. Very few wagons of this type are found with this unusual configuration of the seat and driver. Fallows used the letters “IXL” to mean “I Excel” and was a way to mark the toys with their company identification. Fallows toys, with one exception (Merriam), was the only company to do so. A similar toy is pictured on plate 3 in the Perelman Antique Toy Museum book. SIZE: 21-1/4″ l. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: At first glance the toy appears to be in all original untouched condition, but upon closer examination there is some scattered paint restoration. Minor solder repairs to axle supports. 1-10158 (2,000-4,000)
