IMPORTANT OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT “TWO SISTERS” BY BERNARD KARFIOL (1886-1952). 3/4 Portrait shows two young women standing beside each other. One in red dress holding open green book, the other gold skirt and topless, she holds a red rose at waist. Signed lower left “B. Karfiol”. Housed in it’s original white painted wood frame. Lucite name plate with title and artist. Back of frame has several exhibition labels including Associated American Artist, Sid Deutsch Gallery, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, and Minneapolis Art Institute. This painting is also from the Encyclopedia Britannica collection of contemporary American paintings and has a label from the estate of William Benton. Frame is inscribed “Frame made for Bernard Karfiol by Carl Sandelin framing 133 E. 60th St. NYC”. Ref: Our auction 8/25/00 lot 1100 same sisters depicted. SIZE: 36″h x 28″w.
