OIL ON PAPER ON MASONITE, STUDY FOR THE “LANDING OF COLUMBUS” BY ALBERT BIERSTADT (1830-1902). Scene shows large trees on left side of bluff. Viewer looks over area with small huts and palm trees with water beyond. Signed lower left “A. Bierstadt”. Housed in a fine carved and gilt frame. On the reverse are several exhibition labels including Kennedy Galleries, Santa Fe Art Auction Ltd. Co. (lot 050), exhibited at the High Museum of Art, 1973. Illus. in the Kennedy Quarterly, Kennedy Galleries, Inc., NY, Vol. VII, No. 1, March, 1967, p. 36. Sight of painting: Watkins Island (Bahamas). Painted in 1892, the final version of “The Landing of Columbus” was destroyed in a fire at the Museum of Natural History. SIZE: 13 3/4″ h. x 19″ w. CONDITION: Very Good. 14-89 (10,000-20,000)
